Arsenal 3 Burnley 1

By Burnley FC
December 22 2018

The Clarets are heading towards Christmas in the bottom three of the Premier League but showed the fighting spirit they will need to get out of trouble by pushing Arsenal all the way at the Emirates Stadium.

Burnley remain without an away success since the end of September and were unable to break the stranglehold Arsenal have inflicted on them in winning 10 of the past 11 fixtures between the two clubs thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and an injury-time strike from Alex Iwobi.

But even taking into account last-minute winners in three of the last four meetings, few of those victories have had to be harder earned as Sean Dyche’s men bossed a second half book-ended by goals from Aubameyang and substitute Iwobi.

Ashley Barnes reduced the arrears with half an hour to go and the Clarets sniffed the possibility of a point as Arsenal were hanging on to try and close out the win that would keep them in touch with the top four.

But a second goal wouldn’t come and Burnley now return to Turf Moor for back-to-back home games against Everton and West Ham knowing they now need to put points to performances to give their survival bid added momentum.

With Aaron Lennon and Robbie Brady both on the injured list – and Johann Berg Gudmudsson not quite ready to return – the Clarets were shorn of all their senior widemen.

Another bruising performance with nothing going our way. If we keep playing with the grit shown then points must come our way.

Only caught bits of the match on Sky today, the Arsenal first goal looked a cracker but when I saw the replay it looked like Long had switched off allowing the Arsenal player to nip in and shoot, not a clean strike but it found the corner, Not a lot of goodwill between men and it got a bit physical at times, an early second half goal, Arsenal breaking at pace with the Burnley defence struggling to cover, the Burnley goal a bit of pinball in the Arsenal box,the ball breaking to Barnes who smashed it home. The third Ozil cutting across the box, his shot deflected to an Arsenal player who was close to offside, bang 3-1. Plenty of fight and determination by Burnley, will be interesting to see how they do at home v Everton, think that’s a game where they could pick up a point or three.

Having watched the game live on TV and then a replay i would have to agree with Soapy give Heaton or Pope (if fit) a game I think Hart could have done better in his attempts to save the ball

Its all about commanding the box and organising the defence for me. Heats was outstanding at that. Wood isn't cutting the mustard for me. Start Vydra with Ashley. Otherwise I thought at 2-1 down we were going to nick a point. Arsenal looked rattled.

Watching the first half of the Everton game - Hart HAS to go - he is rooted to his line. It's having an impact on the rest of the defense.

Had a good paddle out with my 13 year old Xmas Eve Shanghai - he's getting good, I'm pleased to say!
