The Clarets got their first Premier League point on the board but will wonder how it wasn’t three after an hour-long siege of St Mary’s.

Sean Dyche’s men dominated for long periods and created more than enough chances in an outstanding performance to have repeated their opening-day win at Chelsea a year ago.

But top-class goalkeeping from Alex McCarthy kept the Saints alive and what looked an incorrect offside call denied Jack Cork what would have been an early winner on his return to a former home.

Southampton hadn’t started a top-flight season with a home win since 1988-89 and the days they played at The Dell.

And the way the Clarets started did nothing to suggest that record was about to improve.

There was no sign of weariness following their return from Turkey in the early hours of Friday morning.

And with the return of fresh legs in the shape of Matt Lowton, Stephen Ward, Aaron Lennon and Chris Wood – Joe Hart retaining his place in goal – Dyche’s men were like greyhounds out the traps.

Some of their early football was outstanding to leave the Saints, who had won just one of their previous 11 home league games, rocking.

Pressure counts for nought if the onion bag doesn't bulge. Nonetheless a point away from home is a very good result.I have not even seen the highlights.Did Ashley play and how did he play ?

First half we were great. Retained possession better than for a long time. We had 58% possession first half and Cork had a goal disallowed.

Second half they changed from 5 at the back to 4-4-2 and we never adjusted. They got back into the game and could have won it.

Ings and Ash both came on with about half an hour to go. Ings was the best player on the field. Ash huffed and puffed.

I think that overall a draw was a reasonable result.

Man we looked good first half. if Dufour was there to deliver that final pass then we would have won,

Disappointed in JBG and Lennon. They didn't generate much for us

Ings was the best attacking player since the seventies for me. I would have loved him back. Players with his time and vision are few and far between.

JayRod was good but not in the same class for me. If he wasn't a local boy not sure that there would be the clammering to have him back.
