Barnsley 3 – 2 Luton

By Red Army
October 19 2018

Barnsley continued their excellent start to the season with a 3 – 2 win over Luton.

The reds were more comfortable than the score line suggested as the young left back Williams conceded a stupid penalty on the stroke of half time at 2 – 0 and we yet again let them back in it when they scored late on to make it 3 – 2.

The super reds did all this without the influential Moore who was injured as well as international duo Davies and Dougall.

Goals from new goal machine Brad Potts, the very impressive Cameron McGeehan and super sub Mamadou Thiam with a beauty did the damage in a rare win on live television.

McGeehan standing in for Dougall was excellent, man of the match in my eyes, and despite Dougall’s excellent form so far this season; it would be very harsh if McGeehan was dropped for the trip to Charlton.

If he’s fit, I would bring Moore in for Brown. I think Brown did well but he is better off utilised from the bench and I still believe we missed Moore against Luton.

The young left back Williams had a torrid afternoon despite starting the game well. He was all at sea defensively and needlessly gave away the penalty. I have never been a fan of Pinillos but I think that substitution should have been made earlier than it was and he must come back in to the team to play Charlton. I’m sure Williams will turn out to be a good player for us but he just isn’t ready yet.

Speaking of not being ready yet, I think the same can be said about Walton. I wanted Walton to start the season as number 1 based on how he finished last season and how Davies played last season.

However, we clearly missed Davies on Saturday. Walton showed that he is still young and still learning. I also wonder if he’s lost a bit of confidence with both being dropped and that calamitous incident in the cup earlier in the season.

Moncur showed in the first half why he should start every game. He did fade in the second but I don’t know whether it was a fitness issue or just because he couldn’t get on the ball as much.

On to Charlton then as we look to keep up this fantastic start to the season.
