What a Start to the Season

By Red Army

Article includes:   Rochdale 0 – 4 Barnsley.   Tom Bradshaw to Millwall.

What a start to the season this has been for the Super Reds. Still unbeaten, no goals conceded and scoring goals for fun (barring the Wimbledon game).

I went to Spotland on Tuesday and was very impressed with the way Barnsley played. After missing Oxford and Bradford due to being holiday, the Wimbledon match was the first I saw of the reds this season giving me the impression that my memory was correct and League One football is just terrible to watch.

Maybe that isn’t the case given the way we played on Tuesday. If we continue to play like that then maybe we can both win and entertain at this level.

The tempo and attacking intent was there from the off and Rochdale had no answer to what we threw at them. On top of that we are also looking very solid. All promising signs for the season ahead.

Keifer Moore grabbed the headlines with a well taken hat trick. He also showed he was more than just a big lump up front as he was a willing runner down the channels and quite often out wide.

Potts was the other man on the score sheet. I was very critical of him last season but I thought he played well on Tuesday. He looked quicker and more mobile than last season. I think this could simply be because we are playing at a lower level but who knows until we are back in the Championship.

Potts has many attributes to work with at this level, such as his size and strength and his willingness to get all over the park. He also has many deficiencies; he certainly isn’t the most technically gifted footballer I have seen and at Championship level that cost him. At this level, I feel that he can probably get away with it a bit more but time will tell.

I thought Mowatt and Dougall were outstanding in midfield. Particularly Mowatt who not only looks to create when on the ball but also works hard for the team as does Dougall.

At the back Pinnock and Lindsay look solid and Davies looks to have regained his confidence. I was particularly critical of these two full backs last season but felt both had decent games on Tuesday.

Cavare has the pace and power and we could easily make a good player out of with. Pinilos I’m still not sure about but that block he made to prevent Rochdale scoring was exceptional to say the least.

Thiam was involved a lot but nothing he did really came off whether it be his crossing, shooting or when he tried to take people on.

The only weak link for me on Tuesday was Bradshaw who I felt was a passenger all night. Well that’s not something we need to worry about now he’s gone.

People say he runs all day. I personally feel he makes it look like he does with no intention of getting near the ball. To begin with he has no anticipation of where the ball might be played until the pass is made so he’s setting off well after he should. He then runs to close down slower than he can in my opinion with no intention of trying to win the ball or make a tackle.

I felt sorry for him at times last season when he was up front on his own and asked to do things he can’t such as hold the ball up and play with his back to goal.

I thought this season he would have a chance of scoring some goals playing with someone like Moore but on the evidence of the last two games he doesn’t look anywhere near the standard required. I certainly don’t think he is anywhere near good enough for the Championship and if we are getting over £1million for him then I’m happy for him to go whether we have a replacement lined up or not.
