Barnsley 3 – 2 Sheffield United

By Red Army

Barnsley kept alive their Championship survival hopes with a last gasp win over South Yorkshire rivals and play off chasing Sheffield United at Oakwell.

Barnsley battled back form 2 – 1 down to take all three points as Gardner, McBurnie and Bradshaw were on target for the reds.

Unfortunately the reds couldn’t back it up at Ipswich on Tuesday but their fate remains in their own hands as they entertain relegation rivals Bolton at Oakwell on Saturday and then play their game in hand away at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Many Barnsley fans feared the worst at 2 – 1 down to Sheff U on Saturday especially when Morais substituted the impressive Moncur. The crowd greeted this with a chorus of boos and many muttered that the manager had lost the plot.

Moncur had the best game I’d seen him have in a long time and for me was the best player on the pitch. To take him off seemed ridiculous but the tactic worked and the reds nicked the points.

Along with Moncur, Moore also impressed for the reds. He held the ball up well, won countless flick ons that no one gambled on, brought the ball down brilliantly in the box in the build up to the McBurnie goal and crossed for Bradshaw to head in.

I have been critical of Bradshaw for most of the season, mainly because he can’t do any of the above that was mentioned about Moore. He lacks the size, strength and touch to do that but when he was playing up top on his own that’s what you need to do.

However I think he could work alongside Moore as he could just let Moore do all that and play to his strengths – getting in the box at scoring goals.

At the moment with McBurnie here there is no way to get Bradshaw in the team and he is better used coming off the bench but next season when we don’t have McBurnie it might work.

Isgrove for me had another poor game. His positional sense off the ball his awful and the thing he always had in abundance – his work rate and energy – Hammill has done that role better this season.

Potts, while he has improved has the season has gone on, for me he will never be a Championship footballer. His lack of mobility is frightening, he can’t use the size and ‘strength’ that he has, he has to let the ball run across him before trying to control it and we aim for his head off every goal kick and he wins none.

I felt that despite the win we missed Williams in midfield and it looks like that’s him done for the season now. He has come in for criticism from a number of fans at times this season.

He has had quite a few bad games on the ball this season but even when he’s having a bad game in that respect he always offers something with his ability to get around the pitch and get a foot in. For me he is the player of the season by quite some distance. I know who he won’t win it but I can’t think of another player that even runs him close.

Next season whether we stay up or go down this squad needs strengthening big time. We’ve dropped on with there being some bad teams this time round. This squad in the Championship next season goes down no doubt about it. Also this squad in League One would struggle to make the play offs.

Must buys in the summer, and this is before we’ve sold anyone, a keeper, two central midfielders, a winger and a striker at the bare minimum.

If we stay up then I believe this manager deserves to keep his job for next season. If we go down, it would be hard to place the blame on him for it and I wouldn’t just sack him without a plan in place but if Mick McCarthy would be willing to come then Morais would be on his bike for me.
