Barnsley 0 – 2 Leeds

By Red Army
November 27 2017

A bad week for the reds as they suffered two home defeats without scoring a goal to end a run of four games undefeated.

Whilst Barnsley were the better team against Cardiff they failed to test the keeper and were undone by a trademark Cardiff set piece and the Welsh team walked away with a trade mark Neil Warnock 1 – 0 away win.

The Leeds game was a different story altogether as our West Yorkshire rivals were the better team throughout and superior in every department. It would be fair to say that 2 – 0 flattered Barnsley.

While Leeds knocked the ball about quickly and with purpose, the reds panicked in possession and far too often gave the ball straight back to Leeds.

Leeds were physical and got stuck in but the only red willing to give them it back was Williams, it’s just a shame he was so poor on the ball as his effort and determination stood out as the rest of the team bottled the occasion.

This was probably our worst performance under Hecky and I’m pretty sure it was no more than a blip. We may get some more hidings this season but I can’t see us performing that poorly again in terms of the effort that Paul Heckingbottom demands and the sheer fear of the occasion.

A big Yorkshire derby live on sky is probably the biggest game of a lot of this teams careers and for the most part it looked like a good Championship team playing against a team from the lower leagues which most of our side were last season.

The first goal in particular was very disappointing. Williams had the chance to take him down and take a booking for the team, when he didn’t do it then MacDonald should have come and closed the shut. All that however doesn’t excuse how Davies managed to let the shot go in. Another mistake from our goalkeeper and I think I can only remember Nick Colgan making them more often as a regular number one since I began watching the reds in the late 80’s.

I also just can’t see what Potts brings to the table at all. I am hopeful that he improves but watching his performances so far this season I’m not even sure he looks like he could cut it in League One. He is far too slow both with the ball and without it and he certainly doesn’t make the most of the physical presence he has.

The fans I also felt put pressure on the team with moans and groans starting early in the first half and booing the team off at half time when the players were already visibly struggling with the occasion.

I don’t think this helps the team at all but in fairness to the fans, they pay their money and are entitled to get behind the team or get on to the team as they see it.

Anyway we move on now to two away fixtures. Reading on Tuesday night and Bolton on Saturday. I think that we must take at least three points from one of these fixtures and I am hoping for at least four as both teams are struggling a bit so far this season.
