Barnsley 2 – 2 Middlesbrough

Barnsley battled for a hard fought point against big spending Middlesbrough at Oakwell as the spirit and determination of this side stood out as Middlesbrough continued to pressure throughout the match.

Despite taking the lead twice it was certainly a point gained for the reds as Middlesbrough were dominant throughout. The reds stuck to their task and were rewarded for their hard work and spirit.

Football is a game that is played off the ball as well as on the ball and boss Paul Heckingbottom will be pleased with how the reds performed off the ball as a Boro side full of former Premier League players dominated possession.

Both centre halves had to play well and man of the match Fryers was on hand for some last ditch defending on more than one occasion to save the reds.

Pearson looked more comfortable at right back but when everyone is fit I just can’t see where he gets in to the team.

The midfield didn’t see much of the ball as expected against a team like Middlesbrough but worked hard throughout. McGeehan scored and looks a better prospect than Potts in my opinion although I still think he will take a while to get up to Championship pace.

Potts I felt was having a slightly better game but unfortunately it was him who gave the ball away that led to the corner for the first goal, Having said that, the defending from the corner was poor as when the ball fell to the edge of the box the entire reds team were lined up on the six yarder and had let their men go.

As for the Middlesbrough first goal, well Ashley Fletcher just can’t stop scoring for us. Once a red, always a red.

Middlesbrough’s second we could be critical on Jackson for coming a mile out of position for a ball he was never going to win, Pearson for getting done on the wing and Davies for getting beat at his near post but we could just give Middlesbrough credit for their slick passing, brilliant movement, good pace and powerful finish.

Despite being 2 – 1 up when Thiam came on it was most definitely the right decision. Had we stuck to the five in midfield we would have most certainly have lost this game. They were coming on to us and we were getting deeper and deeper and we needed someone to hold the ball up top and enable us to press higher up the pitch.

Thiam did just that. His hold up play, power, pace and aerial ability gave us something we had been lacking all season and he really looked the part.

It might be time to go to 4-4-2 now on the evidence of that display.
