Striker Stefan Payne has left Barnsley to join Shrewsbury on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.
I must admit that I am a bit gutted to see Payne leave. I felt that his all-round was good and every time he got a chance he played well.
Unfortunately for him he didn’t get enough time on the pitch, mainly due to injuries.
I’m also not sure that even if he had been in the team that he would have scored the goals required at this level to compliment the rest of his play.
I am sure he will be a success in League One with Shrewsbury and I wish him all the best for the rest of his career.
I am convinced though that had he played up front with an out and out goal scorer and been given a run in the team that he would have had a very successful career at Oakwell.
I also think that there is an element of risk to this move as we’ve not seen if the new French guy can adapt to the Championship and despite a decent start to the season the jury is still out on Bradshaw until he proves he can score goals consistently.
If we are going to play one up front all season then maybe we did have one too many strikers or maybe there is a proven Championship striker lined up to come in before the window closes?
Maybe Payne himself wanted to go for first team football, after spending time there last season on loan, and as he was down the pecking order then the club didn’t stand in his way?
Perhaps we just needed more room in the squad to sign yet another full back? Anyway all the best to Payne and lets turn over the Blunts tomorrow and really get the season going.
