Barnsley 4 – 3 Morecombe

By Red Army
August 9 2017

Barnsley got off the mark for the season with an unconvincing victory over League Two side Morecombe in the League cup first round.

The reds surrendered a 3 – 1 lead to allow their visitors to level up at 3 – 3 with just under ten minutes remaining.

Substitute Hedges again popped up with an injury time goal to ensure the reds went through to the next round and avoided extra time.

Positives to be taken from this game are that Hedges is a super sub goal machine and both strikers managed to open their accounts for the season with Bradshaw netting two and Ugbo also scoring. And obviously winning any game of football is better than losing and will hopefully give the lads some confidence.

Unfortunately despite a victory I feel there are still more negatives to be taken from this one.

We played what was possibly our strongest available team and struggled to beat a team two divisions below us.

We conceded three goals at home to a league two team. The way we have been shipping goals so far this season is worrying and if we don’t sort the defence out then we will be in big trouble in the Championship.

I am hoping the goals will give both strikers confidence for our upcoming league fixtures. Bradshaw showed what a goal scorer he is against lower league opposition but needs to now start and produce the goods in the Championship. Is he good enough to do that? The jury is still out on that one.

The reds are still hopeful of bringing more signings in before the close of the window and I’d like to see us abandon our usual policy and actually bring in three or four experienced, proven Championship performers to go with our young and hungry squad.

I feel this is now imperative if we are to survive in the Championship this season but whether the powers that be agree with this is another thing.

I think that the board are willing to stick with the long term plan even if it means suffering the odd relegation as they believe in this structure long term.

The fans however will not want to go down just because the board are too stubborn to change their recruitment policy for the odd player and performances and results could turn fans away in their thousands which could be more detrimental in the long run.
