Barnsley Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom has revealed to BBC Radio Sheffield that it would be almost impossible to sign Matty James on a permanent deal from Leicester City.
The difference in his current Leicester salary and the maximum that Barnsley would be able to offer would mean that James would have to take a significant pay cut to sign for the reds which Hecky believes is very unlikely to happen.
Although the news will come as no surprise to reds fans, it certainly is a blow as James is now really starting to look the part in the middle of the park.
He also still looks some way off full fitness so would likely become even better next season after getting regular first team football and a full pre-season under his belt.
Hecky and his staff will no doubt already be scouting the next midfield signing(s) and preparing for the eventuality of possibly this seasons star man Josh Scowen also departing in the summer when his contract expires.
