Arsenal Fear No One
After this week’s draw at Bolton Wenger declared that his team has mental strength, was it a knock at last year’s squad that lost at Bolton? Well today his team put seven past Blackburn, who are third from the bottom, proving his team fear no one, especially when there is nothing to fear. A seven- one victory is always enjoyable, and you can only play what is in front of you. But it is hard to judge how good a performance it was considering how awful Blackburn were. To put it in perspective Arsenal scored 8 league goals at home in the whole of November, December and January, in one match they scored nearly three months worth of goals. Paul Robinson must be sick of the sight of Arsenal who have now put 10 goals past him this season, that’s 25% of all the goals the Gunners have scored in the league so far.
RVP goes ahead of Bergkamp
It was a freezing cold day at the Emirates, and there were quite a few empty seats, there was little excitement in the air, and the limited away seating was more than half empty. As the substitutes were read out Arshavin’s name was not jeered, and a small number clapped politely. On 82 seconds Arsenal found the Blackburn defence wide open for van Persie to go ahead of Bergkamp in the Arsenal scoring records, making him the 10th most prolific striker in Arsenal’s history. On 32 min Pedersen scored a free kick against a statuesque Arsenal defence. For a few moments it felt like groundhog day, was it going to be another day of wasted opportunities?
But RvP, and Oxlade Chamberlain, put a stop to any hope of a Blackburn recovery by scoring goals on 38 minutes and 40 minutes respectively. What a wonderful goal by the Ox, so cool at skipping round Paul Robinson and slotting home. This kid looks the real deal, I just hope that RvP is still around next season because they will be a wonderful combination. The sending off of Givet before half time meant that any Blackburn hope for recovery was finished. Three one up, and only ten men to play against, I can’t remember the last time we went in at half time so secure.
The Stasis of Arsene Wenger
In the second half the heart went out of Blackburn and Arsenal got four more goals, it only took six minutes before Arteta to increase the score to four, there was a deflection but the ball looked on target to me. On 54minutes the Ox scored again, and on 62 minutes van Persie completed his hat trick.
At this stage fans near me began to shout out that RvP should be rested, I am told there was a similar mood down at the Clock End, but when Wenger made his first substitution it was the Ox who came off and Henry who came on; this time the crowd applauded both players.

Now that Arsenal are a two man team the crowd felt more confident and did some gentle oleing, meanwhile the team did everything it could to get Henry a league goal. Henry did everything he could not to score, unselfishly passing the ball back, but van Persie insisted on returning the ball back to the Frenchman, so Henry had to score. It was reminiscent of the slow motion old age pensioner goal in Father Ted, it even deflected off Scott Dan before going in, but a goals a goal, and Henry’s name should be allowed to stay on the record. It got a great cheer, but no where near as loud as his goal in the cup.
Seven - one the crowd went home with a warm glow in spite of the severe cold. “It’s back on”, shouted Brian on the way out, “what is I asked?” “The double” he replied, “surely you mean the treble” was my retort, “Milan in a few weeks”. Of course that’s only if you believe that 4th place is a trophy, and even that is not going to be easy, but for now it was time to celebrate, especially the Ox and RvP.
