The Inhihibitedables - Bum of the Month Will it Work?

He wont be there
By Boris Mellor
February 5 2010
Will Arsenal beat Chelsea, or even draw? Well the answer is quite simple - not if they play without fire in their belly as they did in the game against Man U last week. When you think that teams like Birmingham and Hull have done better than us against these two teams you have to question the commitment of our players.

Burnley beat Man U at their ground. Do these teams have better players than us? I really don't think so, so how do you explain the craven performances of Arsenal at home to Man and Chelsea?

Well at least Arsene hasn't changed his mind that we were awful last week. He has watched the match several times since and can still find no consolation. The performance remains as bad as ever from whatever angle he observed it.

Inhibited

So how does he explain it? In one word he says they were inhibited; they played with the handbrake on. Well call me a cynic but I see it differently, I call it laziness, arrogance, idleness and a complete lack of fire of in the belly. His team hasn't got a backbone and until they get one there will be no league title through his bum of the week strategy. What kind of instructor allows a pupil to drive with the handbrake on?

Bum of the week strategy

So let us consider the bum of the week strategy, the idea based on Man U performance in winning the title last year. The fact that they only beat one top four team last year didn't stop them winning the title. Liverpool beat them twice and failed to win the title.

"From December 1940 to May 1941 Joe Louis took on a series of challengers at the rate of one per month. Rightly or wrongly, history labelled this series of fights as "The Bum Of The Month Club". (East Side Boxing)

Man U won the title because they beat the bum of the week club, those teams that were in the bottom half of the table. Wenger seized on this strategy as a way of winning the title (To be fair a lot of fans including me, advocated this as a way forward), be consistent against the "bums" and you can win the league.

However two things were not taken into account, one Joe Louis and Man U were already champions, and secondly you must not be a bum yourself. Already Arsenal have failed to beat several bums with defeat at Sunderland, and draws at West Ham and Burnley. Those three games account for seven points already, seven points that would see the Gunners top as they face Chelsea. Instead they are looking over the edge of an abyss. Lose and they will be 9 points behind, some believe that if that happens it won't matter, Arsenal will make up the deficit as they did last time round.

Well history does repeat itself, but first as tragedy and then as farce. Lose and Arsenal will continue to play catch up, and real champions don't spend their season worrying about opponents' results. The minute you do you are halfway beat.

Even if Arsenal win, and I hope they do, winning the league will still be a big ask. Can anyone say with certainty that they will beat Stoke on a freezing Saturday in February? Last year Arsenal beat Chelsea away, but still lost to the "bums" afterwards, undoing the good work.

Of course Wenger is right there is no point on his team dwelling on the Utd defeat last Sunday, but those who fail to learn lessons from their mistakes are condemned to repeat them.

From Invincibles to inhibited in a few years, it will take a team with strong will to reverse that trend, this team is a long way from proving they have such a will.

Eduardo won't play, and Diaby faces a late fitness test. Campbell is back in the squad.

I think its pretty basic. Wenger has ultimate faith in the footballing talent of his team and sends them out to play the same, irrespective of the opposition. Its good enough to beat everyone, except the very best.

The team certainly weren't inhibited last week, they were bombing all round the shop. They just didn't have the individuals to make their football speak.

I didnt see any bombing around in the first half, I dont always think Wenger is right, but on this occassion he is spot on - they were inhibited, in fact some were downright lazy, Denilson, and Nasri too name but two.

Clichy was like a frightened rabit and Almunia awful.

I dont mind them losing if they at least try, they didnt - they stood off for most of the match

I think I remain the only person in the world who thought we should have at least got a draw.

For once you are right Tom.

Not one Arsenal fan at work, and there are quite a few, thought we deserved anything

I just don't agree with anyones analysis of the game. I've kept quiet all week about it. At one point Clichy bombed about 70 meters down the pitch. Not very inhibited. I seriously came away with the impression that we had thrown everything at them and that it just wasn't good enough, by a long way.

I don't have a problem with being wrong, after what everybody else has said I am seriously starting to doubt my football watching capabilities.

I thought we were pretty damn good. Results and goals always swap people's opinion, but we could and should have been two three up before United had one single chance.

Exactly that.

When Nani scored I thought 'oh well, we'll score a couple here'

Cant be bothered to argue with everyone.

I was sitting there thinking, after Arshavin didn't pass for the second time, "Man Utd will score a break away goal and every Arsenal fan will forget we have played well"

It happened.

I suppose the horror fades with time.
Lets just remind ourselves, we let in three goals with the most useless defending imaginable.

We did not really threaten them until last ten minutes, we had three shots on target all match.

Wenger was gob smacked after the game, how come he didnt spot we had played so well?

I watched the game from the North end, what struck me was that in the first half we never got any numbers into their box. It was Arshavin on his own, the problem with that was he was crowded out.

So apart from being ineffective at defending, and just as ineffecive at attacking we had a good game. Another good game like that and we will be well out of it.

Perhaps, if you can stand it, you should watch a replay.

But we still created many chances and dominated for large parts. Our mental attitude is dismal, but we are a much more talented team than United.

3 chances on target, 13 off target, but the untalented Utd put 3 in the net, and its only what goes in the net that counts.

Like it or not, and I dont like it, we dont have a front man available who is as good as Rooney. Most of their defence and keeper also appeared to be more talented on the day

Yet we had more chances. So how were their defenders more talented? Because we failed to score you make out as though they actually limited us.

We lost, don't matter how many chances you have or how
you dominate unless you score.

We didn't have a proper striker on the field for the
majority of the game. That approach might work against
Hull but not Manu.

More talented players,really?
Even if that's so talent without effort is like a beautiful
corpse and we looked dead at 2-0 down.

Wenger said we were poor and I agree with him, for
a change.

How were their defenders more talented Tom?
They didnt give us space to let off the perfect shot, our shots were hurried or from bad angles, and their keeper didnt flap.

Van de Saar didnt help our shots in

if Clichy isn't fit why is he played over Traore? Just can't understand that, really. Traore hs improved a great deal and what do you think it does to his views of making it at Arsenal when he is replaced by an unfit and completely useless Clichy? Clichy should be benched like Lehman was. Suggesting that Traore is not necessarily better than Clichy, but Clichy jut needs to get his head straight and fast.

I assume Wenger reasoned that Traore would have done even worse, and at last Clichy will be a match closer to fitness.
Thats only a guess

Its not a guess. Clichy is far superior to Traore so he played.

We very often outplay teams for large portions of games, our problem is we dont always score when we are on top.
Also we seem to make individual mistakes that cost us,my problem is we dont seem to learn from them.
We could maybe should have scored two before utd scored, and we had chances after that,we didnt take our chances they did and that is the difference.

DB10,the best.

What needs to be learnt is that football is not strictly come dancing, there are no prizes for pretty play.
As Chapman put it "The team that scores the most goals wins".

I am sick of hearing about how we nearly won, if there were points for "nearlys" we would be top of the league.

CL semi man utd 3-1 first 5 mins ripped them apart.
Home to Chelsea 4-1 first 15mins ripped them apart.

Away to Man utd 2-1 played them off the park.
Home to Chelsea 3-0 Defence and midfield sound for 40 mins
Home to Man utd 3-1 good for 30mins

seen it all before, a 2-2 draw or a 2-1 win seem far away, our best bet is to go for 0-0 a draw like we did at home last season at least then we'll get a point, this gung ho stuff is punishing us.

for some reason you dont take into account that if we could change our results..so could Chelsea..so we're still in the same position

now the only thing we need to do is BEAT chelsea..none of this drawing sh.t...and luckily for us our next game is against Liverpool
