It would be extremely risky for Arsenal to depend upon Kos returning to action in any capacity. It is far more likely that his playing career at a top level is over.
It has been reported for several years that Kos has been suffering from chronic Achilles tendonitis in both ankles. Given his latest injury, I believe that it is more likely that he has been suffering from tendonosis. This condition is a gradual weakening and degeneration of the interior structure of the tendons themselves. Tendonosis occurs more frequently in athletes who play sports that involve repetitive sprinting and jumping like basketball and football. In some cases, the tendons eventually degenerate to the point where they become so structurally deficient that they can become prone to rupture. I am guessing that this is exactly what happened to Kos.

Recall the specific moment when Kos tore his Achilles. He was not jumping for a header, planting his foot for a sudden change of direction, or even sprinting to catch an attacker. No, it ruptured AFTER the play was over and he was walking back up the pitch. Walking! This evidences a catastrophic injury caused by a worn and thinning tendon that simply gave out under no direct strain. That is very significant ... especially when you factor in that the exact same condition has been occurring in the achilles tendon in the other ankle as well.

Kos is damaged goods. It is a damned shame for him and Arsenal. Nobody's fault.
It would be reckless for us to include him in any long-term plans at the Club.

Good post. Spot on.
