7000 ish just based on the extra away support
I've seen this sort of figure bandied around a few times so thought I would check. According to the EFL site the average away following in L2 was 484. That was in 2016/17 and the latest figures I could find on a quick internet trawl. Since that season Pompey, Plymouth, Blackpool and Luton who were probably the best followed teams have all been promoted. (Coventry came down but went up again so can be ignored). It is very reasonable to expect that the average away following in L2 next season will be in the region of 400-450, perhaps even less. Now I don't know how many away fans visited PP last season on average but we aren't talking 2 men and a dog so, I'd estimate, that we could probably anticipate about an extra 250-300 on the gate for away fans.
So to get to 7,000 we would need to attract the equivalent of around 1,400 extra home fans a game and get league average away followings which can fluctuate based on geography, opposition form and timing. I'd suggest the only way we get to this sort of level is by challenging for the league from start to end of the season.
