Irn Bru Scottish Challenge Cup
08 June, 2018 16:13
Am not sure whether its worth posting this now that our non league days are over and hopefully for good too, but anyway - for the past 2 seasons the Scottish Challenge Cup has had Welsh, Northern Irish and Rep of Ireland sides competing in the competition and from next season there will be two VNL teams entering the competition from the 2nd round, those two teams being Sutton Utd and Borehamwood. Bit of a joke now calling it the SCOTTISH Challenge Cup with sides from all over the British Isles now taking part in it.. The Scottish professional football league said that Sutton and Borehamwood were selected coz they were the 2 highest ranking VNL sides from last season that were not promoted. I have no idea if Sutton and Borehamwood could have turned down the invite from the SPFL, I would think that they could if they wanted. So if we had lost at Wembley we would have had an invite from the SPFL to enter this seasons Irn Bru Cup,, that would have been a new one for the Rovers, lol. Arbroath v Tranmere Rovers in early September, or Connahs Quay Nomads v Tranmere Rovers or Tranmere Rovers v Linfield or Tranmere Rovers v Montrose, lol.

lol, imagine Elgin City v Tranmere Rovers on a freezing cold day/night in mid November or January, not far from The Orkney Islands.

Interesting to note that the 2018 Irn Bru Scottish Challenge Cup Final was -

Dumbarton 0 - 1 Inverness Caly Thistle, with the only goal of the final coming in the 92nd minute from Ex-Rover Carl Tremarco. The final was played at St Johnstone FCs ground in front of an attendance of 4,602.. More of an incentive if the final could be played at Hampden or Celtic or Rangers.

It’s their Checkatrade (we give zero f*cks) tournament. Imagine if we had 2 of those competitions this coming season?

The TRFC drummers would have had to put down their drums and pick up the bagpipes.. Haggis pie and a nip of scotch in your half time hot beverage and your knackers frozen solid under that kilt.

Peterhead v Sutton Utd, bloody hell that would be a bit of mileage, lol. Peterhead is closer to the coast of Norway than it is to south London.

Ross County is further. It's north west of Inverness and just the 595 miles or 10 and a half hours drive from Sutton.

Have just been on Wikipedia to read up on the old Anglo-Scottish Cup which I think was the old Texaco Cup. The Anglo-Scottish cup only lasted 6 seasons from 1975 to 1981 and little interest was shown in it. They tried to revive the competition in the 1987/88 season with a direct final between the 1987 FA Cup winners ( Coventry City ) and the 1987 Scottish FA Cup Winners ( St Mirren ) The final was over 2 legs but only 1 leg was played, the 1st leg had such a low attendance that they didn't bother with the 2nd leg and the whole thing was shelved. I actually cant remember it so that shows how meaningless the damn thing must have been.

list of Anglo-Scottish Cup Finals.. all aggregate scores..

1975/76 - Middlesbro 1-0 Fulham

1976/77 - Notts forest 5-1 Leyton Orient

1977/78 - Bristol city 3-2 St Mirren

1978/79 - Burnley 4-2 Oldham Ath

1979/80 - St Mirren 5-1 Bristol City

1980/81 - Chesterfield 2-1 Notts County

1987/88 - Revived competition that failed

NOTE.. English sides dominating the competition with only one Scottish team ever reaching a final, that being St Mirren ( twice. ) Does that prove that Scottish sides didnt give a damn about the competition OR Scottish football is a bag of sh*te?
