If you could....
15 April, 2018 21:56
Go back and re-live any game you've been to in your Tranmere past which one would it be?

Whether it be one you went to with a parent, friend, outstanding score, incredible comeback or just a game from your past you never forget.

My personal one was in 95, Tranmere Vs Birmingham city in the league cup. An early oggy by John Mcgreal was countered by a last minute Ian Moore goal. The last few minutes of singing in the cowies has never left me...pure emotion, all fans singing as loud as they could and the reason I've never stopped supporting is because I know that's all still in us somewhere.

What's yours?

Zenith Data System cup tie versus Newcastle. My daughter was the mascot that night. It ended 6-6 with Rovers winning on pens.
I'd taped it on the video and when a mate said he could put it on DVD I agreed.
I've never seen it since.😓

My very odd second is a 0-0 against Charlton. Easily the most boring game I've ever been at but one that stands out. It was like everyone knew nothing was going to happen so started chatting, there was a paper aeroplane throwing competition in the cowies, two pigeons took up their place on a goalpost and became a talking point. An odd game where fans seemed to be there for eachother as a get together and not the game.

Tranmere 3 - 0 Bolton, league cup semi final. This is the period where we absolutely hated each other, chaillaner had his long throws and big fat Sam hated us with vengeance and wouldn’t even let his players use our showers and facilites calling them dirty!

there are so many games but if I had to pick out the most memorable then it would have to be the wembley play off final vs bolton in 1991. I was like loydens old man with his trembling knees and it was like please please please don't let these b*stards equalize. when that final whistle went, the sheer elation was just incredible and its the most elated ive ever been watching the rovers. my voice had never been so hoarse in my whole life. the bolton fans were real a*sholes before, during and after the match and to beat them was magnificent. me and my pals hit the west end that night and we got absolutely blitzed, lol.

at the other end of the scale, the worst ever would have to be a div 4 evening game at prenton vs halifax in the mid 80s, we lost 0-3 and were 3 down at half time. ive never witnessed a more pathetic inept rovers 45 min performance in my life, halifax were poor ,we were, and this is no exaggeration, utter utter dog poo. there were only about 1200 in the ground that night and at half time most of us stood on the borough road had had enough and made for the exit but the gate man wouldn't let us out, saying that he couldn't open the exit gates till 10 mins before the end of the match so we all had to turn around and watch the 2nd half lol.. there have been many woeful rovers performances over the years but thats the one that sticks in my mind the most.

There were some wonderfully entertaining matches in the 91/92 season. That was our first season in the old div 2..we had the 6-6 vs newcastle in the zenith and also remember those games at prenton vs wolves n derby. Both matches ended in 4-3 wins for the rovers. Great atmosphere in those games too with wolves n derby bringing loads of fans on the old open end. Always got entertainment with those kingy sides. We finished about mid table in our first season in div 2 and that season was all about finding our feet in a higher division.

2-0 versus Brighton away, first match in the Division 2. half time with Aldridge scoring both, The tranmere supporter who had been standing with his girlfriend behind me decided to strip and streak onto the pitch and was escorted off with a policeman's old style helmet over his appendages.

I would come back as the Ref in both of the Villa semi finals. No free kick in the lead up to Atkinsons goal at PP; and a red card for Bosnich in the return game.

And a certain Mark Palios marked Alan Ball out of the game.

I was quite young at the time and the following Saturday (the Arsenal game was midweek) we lost in the league and I couldn't understand how we could beat Arsenal at Highbury and then get beaten by a team in our division!!

After 51 Years there are many and probably the obvious one's stick out but, for me Rovers V Stoke City FA Cup 1972, largest crowd ever at PP 24,000 plus and coming back from 2-0 down (I think we were but, I am getting old!!!) to draw 2-2.

I was on the old Kop, as were a lot of Stoke Fans plenty of banter and no trouble.

Pity we lost the replay 2-0, under pretty dubious circumstances if I remember.

I was on a course that week in Chorley and remember sitting in the car park of the college listening to the penalty shootout on the radio.

Very very difficult to choose one game

All games mentioned above are special and I was at most of them including stoke at home in 1972 !

The most memorable was Exeter 87 but the question was which one would you want to live again ?

I finally decided on the 5 2 win against West Ham Xmas 1992
After difficult times in the 70s and 80s we had made unbelievable progress up to a level I never thought I would see

The team was just brilliant that night and I think we moved up to 2nd in div 2 now championship

After that game I thought we had a very good chance of reaching the premier league and the season ended in play off heartbreak ( I didn’t know it would the first of 3 consecutive heartbreaks ! )

When I was a student in the early 80s my mate was a big West Ham and always took the mickey out of little tranmere who almost folded around that time
I was dying to get in touch with him but had lost contact unfortunately ! The days before e mail mobile phones Facebook etc

1992 wasn’t great for me but that match and straight out afterwards with a few friends is a night I will always remember

Close second everton away... sat in the gwladys st dying to celebrate however surrounded by mad scousers threatening the away end and walter smith.. i just wanted to burst with the jubilation i was containing inside... my bluenose mate next to me did not soeak from leaving the ground until i got off at hamilton square and he managed ' text ya later in the week' amazing days

Don't forget Mark McCarrick was also strapped up with bandage round his arm so his arm had restricted movement (might have been broken at the time it was unknown)so he had to play on think all subs had been used up.To the SWA that day Mark was hero for the day

All the above have a good claim but for me it would be the 1957 last home game of the season when we beat Wrexham 2-1 to qualify for the new 3rd division. The season before we had to apply for re-election to the league and no one expected us to qualify for the new 3rd division. at that time after a history of 3 div North football (except for one season in division two). It opened the then exotic prospect of playing teams like QPR, Plymouth, and Southampton.

It was sunny evening with an attendance of 19000 as Wrexham would qualify instead of us if they won. The size of the crowd, the fact that was Wrexham, and that I watched the game from inside the old Birkenhead News and Advertiser score box, having managed to get in there without being seen, all helped make it special.

I had been watching Rovers for eight years then but in that time, other than the odd cup result it felt like a massive achievement. In many ways it was and this was reflected in gates the next season that easily matched those in the late 1990's

There is one mistifying classic you are all missing out....
It is certainly a game for all Rovers fans to get misty eyed over...
Jan 29th 1997.
Tranmere 3-1 Norwich City.
Played in an absolute pea-souper!
Barely anyone in the ground will have seen much and nobody could possibly have seen all the goals!!!
Hence it deserves to be watched again in a ‘proper light’ and relived for all to see!!

That was great, before mobile phones too, I remember one goal we found out from a lad who was listening to the radio. The daftest bit was going home to watch the highlights - might even dig out the season highlights video and watch again!

Was that the game ive heard about where a rovers player was caught by the ref running with the ball under his arm under the fog blanket?
