If New Years Day is to be a blip, then I think we probably need to win today. Whereas a defeat could start to unpick the recent good run that we are on.

I do think that the Fylde game was a bit of a perfect storm for us as a dodgy pitch, rubbish weather, a good opposition looking to get their own back and the fourth game of a busy Christmas period all conspired to create the defeat. The players were not at the level they should have been and have publically apologised so hopefully it won't happen again.

The recent good run definitely got people talking about us again so maybe a little bit of complacency crept in so to hear the response of the players was a good thing, and it may help as a bit of a wake up call.

All away games are tough and today will be as well but we should be confident of winning. Injury and loanees going back to parent clubs would ruin every other squad in the league but our strength in depth should now help us.

We have a good enough squad now to win this league and returning injured players/loan signings will only make us stronger.

Let's focus on beating Barrow today and getting the show back on the road.

I see Wharton is playing for the youth today so a new keeper must be coming in...
Banks going back to Oldham will be a big blow... would like to see Kirby back if he is fully fit. Think it will be a scrappy game but hopefully we will return to winning ways despite the enforced changes.

Need to start winning away from home. If we fail to win today then will it be a case of our away form becoming an issue or it being an issue? Only 3 away wins so far this season in the NL and 2 of those wins were on the plastic.

One disappointment followed by another. We seem to be back to treading water. One point off two teams who were in the bottom half of the table isn't going to win this league.

Wasn't at the game today but sounded like Norwood had opportunities to score and didn't.

We definitely miss the width and pace of DMH. With DMH and Banks in the team we had a glimpse of what it would take to survive in League Two. Now its back to Micky shuffling the pack and my optimism is dented.

Its still a point and I would also like to see gumbs playing as I went to the barrow game and DMH was having problems on the right as soon as gumbs came on he sorted it I think a very good player and we should now be using him, its time for Mickey to shuffle the team or get us a decent winger in as we cant afford to wait for tollit.

Without the width/pace DMH provided and quality of Banks in midfield we are back to the same side that saw us languishing in lower mid table earlier in the season.

Now these two have gone back he needs to address the problem again (pace out wide and quality/presence in midfield) as we won’t go up with the current squad.

No point relying on Tollitt, Kirkby, Wallace, Dunn, Managan coming back into the squad as it’s already proved they either aren’t good enough or can’t be relied on to stay injury free.

Norwood has many plus points, his work rate is fantastic and he does score goals. He gives everything for the shirt and I appreciate that. We pose more threat with him in the team. I do wonder what they do in training though to improve his chances when he is bearing in on goal.

Interesting to note that Wirral Radio were of the opinion that Gumbs should have been the natural replacement for Buxton. I would agree, plus involving the younger home grown talent should be a priority. Ihekwie had a spell at full back before becoming a regular at CB.

Hope Buxton is OK. Sounded a nasty injury. We can't afford to lose any more players.

Not an ideal result, but given the alterations needed to goal and midfield in a short space of time, this kind of result was always going to be a a bit more likely than if this game had been played 2 weeks ago.

Top spot is not an impossibility, but the playoffs will need to be a more realistic aim now and it certainly is a realistic aim.

Adam Mekki should never have been released, may not have been a Johnny Morrisey but he had pace and got at people, why we would release him and sign Rokka, and Davarne Green to never play I'd beyond me. I hope the experiments with lower league players have been knocked on the head, we've signed 3 now and none have worked out.

Whilst I agree that we lack a wide player Mekki overall contribution was never impressive. It was not releasing him that was wrong but failing to replace with better. That hols true in other positions and the return of loan players serves only as a reminder of how badly we recruited in the summer.
The failure to bring on Gumbs is also indicative of a tendency to go for the inadequate but experienced. The return of those we have loaned out only takes the squad backwards

He wasn't the best as I say but better than what we have recruited, which highlights a weakness in the club I think, and the we shouldn't be releasing players unless we have identified and secured their improved replacement. Te club seem happy to take a gamble as opposed to make improvements. I get the restriction in budgets but shouldn't this make all the more important to have a sound scouting network in force, and ultimately it would save the client b more ey in the long run to spend a little more on the recruitment and a little more in wages to secure a player who brings the right quality and fits the managers brief. The likes of Banks were outtheir I think the summer and it makes me wonder that we only find the likes of him and Dmh by chance as opposed to identifying them. The constant summer in and outs and loanees are what got us to the NL in the first place unless we change that we won't get out. Clubs survived e much higher up the league pyramid than us on smaller budgets and that's because they have an ethos and they know what they are looking for.

Correct - there is no ethos as you say unless to sign experienced players found wanting. MM recruitment has been awful consider - Dawson (yes he signed him!), Mangan, Alabi, Waring, McEverley, Green, Cole, Rokka and I would include Wallace who was always a very risky gamble. Worse some were signed on 2 year contracts for heaven's sake so we will forking out money we don't have next season as well which already puts us at a disadvantage whatever League we are in. Ok bring in one "shop in potential" signing which may not pan out but that should be it. The others should deliver and they patently didn't so MP has been forced to find money to allow MM into the loan market wasting even more money to try and prop up these bad decisions.
Meanwhile he ignores our young homegrown players like the plague unless forced into it as even Clarke who arguably also had a fair bit to do with our purple patch would never have been given a start IMO if Ridelagh had stayed fit.

In the cold light of day I would have settled for the point beforehand especially, after the Fylde drubbing.

Listening on the radio, we had a number of chances to win the game without relying on a 93 minute equaliser.

More of a concern and posted elsewhere is our away form which, has been pretty poor in comparison to the last two seasons currently P14 W3 D6 L5.I remain confident our home form will look after itself but cannot say the same for away form.

The loss of Ollie B and DMH has/will affect the team performance but defensively, despite only conceding 26 goals, we look suspect mainly due to our general lack of pace which was never redressed after Michael Ihekwe's departure.

I just hope this "blip" is temporary otherwise we will struggle to maintain a playoff position at best.

That assumes that MM is responsible for signing players, which none of us actually know, and as I understand it MM isn't responsible for signings at the club which would be backed up by the signing of Almond in between managers. Apparently MM and MP have had talks over this earlier in the season due to our poor form where MM requested to sign players of his choice leading to the arrival of DMH and Banks.

The availability of players in the loan market only really starts in September/October rather than the summer. I doubt Banks or DMH would have been available in the summer, same with the players we've farmed out in recent seasons.

Incidentally, Warrington boss Paul Carden mentioned in the press yesterday that he'd been after Devarn Green from us for a while but he hadn't been available. By all accounts the lad had a decent debut yesterday and Steve Jenno, on loan from Southport, scored Warrington's winner - a penalty!

I hope the experiments with lower league players have been knocked on the head, we've signed 3 now and none have worked out.

Yet clubs like Dagenham, Fleetwood and Swindon experiment with non-league players and look at those three players, they've ended up playing Premier League and one played several times for England.

This is the kind of thinking Tranmere should have gone for years ago and but for Tiryaki, in the last 10 years very little non-league exploration was utilised.

There is no solid evidence that Rokka and Green don't work in the first team, as they haven't played and it obviously is not the right time if there ever will be one, but the argument for them is just as valid as Premier league clubs signing league 1 and 2 players and not giving them a sniff for the first 12 months.

Sometimes signings are done not for immediate effect, but to preempt capability, by seeing someone who might progress well, but would do it better at your club with your facilities, so you're attempting to fast track their progress whilst not having to wait another 12 months, possibly miss out and even if not missing out, pay another 30%+ on the transfer fee, when the player has more games and clean sheets / assists / goals to their name.

I'd rather Tranmere signed a 19 year old from a club with 200-300 fans, that was for example a midfielder with something like 20 games, 2 goals and 4 assists, than hope he might still be available in 12 months, when he's had around 50 games 6 goals and 12 assists and costs possibly as much as double or more, because sometimes when you snooze you lose.

Besides if it's not working you're paying them below top 30% wages, so you loan them out, get a good chunk of the future expenditure back and bin them for a cheap payoff if needs be.

compared to the kind of monies recouped for Cresswell's sell-on and Ash Taylors sale value; as examples, even if Tranmere had to bin Rokka and Green for a small amount, they'd still be in credit, big time.

We started the season badly because we played wth no pace and no creativity. We improved greatly when we played with more pace and creativity. It looks like we may slide backwards because we've started playing with less pace and creativity. It was known in the summer that Wallace, Tollit (and Kirby) would be out for quite a while and there was no guarantee of if or when they'd return to full form and fitness. Who were their replacements? The ongoing mystery of Waring exemplifes the strange comgs and goins. Could he have been useful here? There's no way of knowing. We've had umpteen strikers but, really, Cook and Norwood have been our strikers ; for all his qualities (including scoring a few goals, some of which were very good) Norwood doesn't score enough to be an effectively ever-present first-choice striker in a promotion-winning team. It is still (just about) possible that Wallace and Tollit may return and be in good enough form to get us up, but it may be that we start sliding backwards and finish mid-table. But pace and creativity are essential if we're to go up.

Correct you have to assume that MM is responsible for signing players which I do. I doubt MP who is a successful business man would have the time or the inclination to be involved in scouting players plus MM has brought in several players he knew well from previous positions such as Mangan. Either way for next season it needs to be someone else.

There is a art to finishing one on one's. Norwood just does not have it but his all round game is very good. I'm sure with a good coach he could be shown. I just watched a 120 second video of him with just a few goals and there was 2 one on ones on it. But your right a lot of his goals was in the box but he did score one on one's.

actually Aldo did do a nice little cameo video on one on ones for Nors recently, check it out on Youtube, and Nors seemed genuinely chuffed to get it but of course he is always a gent. I agree it's a nice idea to have one of those famous names work with James for some mornings on the training ground and let's not forget our very own Muiry if we're talking about role models and mentors but..................................how much of this can really be trained into someone and how much is or isn't built into the striker's skill set? but why not try it's a good idea

keep the faith 3 points at Woking tomorrow 2-1 to the SWA 1 each for Cookie and Nors

Yes your right Muir class act. I think every one can improve if shown a better way. I think if you have the talent already you can be taught a trick or two. Norwood is a very good player and I believe if he had a two week crash course with a class act he would get it.

There is a art to finishing one on one's. Norwood just does not have it but his all round game is very good. I'm sure with a good coach he could be shown. Does anyone know do we have coach for the forwards?. With the likes of Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, John Aldridge on our door step could we not get one in for a few weeks and try work with him.
all good strikers might need a few bob to help them out. Malkin scored a few 1on 1s aswell

Imagine a DVD with the greatest goals of Kithson Bain. John Barnes would enjoy all 90 seconds of scoring action on that DVD and the other 59 minutes 30 seconds of him eulogising about Kithson and Kithson eulogising about Kithson (Sm6)

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

You all say that the others didn't score that many 1 on 1s, but they didn't miss that many
