Good or bad? I.e. is Pilling the better keeper?

No, can’t afford to have inexperienced keeper as number one. Made mistakes for goals he conceded at Flyde.

Can’t understand people criticising MM for potentially not using Pilling as number one. Like he said in post match interview , he will do best for Tranmere, and if that involves getting a keeper in on loan , then so be it.

1) Bad
2) None of us really know so I'll bow to MM's judgment.

Sorry but I strongly disagree with you. Pilling must be given a fair chance[Monday was NOT fair to make a proper judgement].He was excellent at Maidstone last season.

I also think that because of his Tranmere connections and him still being a supporter[his own words]Challinor knows us far better than other National league managers and out thought MM and MJ and tapered his tactics accordingly. It was no accident that Montrose and Rowe gave Davies such a rough time from set pieces and also his use of the two excellent [particularly the left side]wing backs.

Now is not the time for pilling to be “tested” out, if he were good enough MM would have had no question or doubt in saying he will play and he’s likely would not be here. What player is going to warm the bench when he will get a game elsewhere.

It’s the most important posistion on the pitch without question, you can get away with bedding a youngster in outfield as there are others around to pick up the slack and talk the player through the game, not so in goal you need to be the finished article from the whistle because mistakes result in goals.

Don’t forget he’s had an appearance this season in the cup to show his talents.

I don’t rate Davies as highly as some on here either, I think his injury will prove to have a silver lining in the form of an improvement between the sticks.

I see Sutton Utd have signed a goalkeeper on loan from Wigan due to injury to the first choice.

Would of thought a back up keeper is one of the easier positions to find though, given that no.1’s rarely lose there spot.

He wouldn't be ''tested out'' as you put it. He IS IMO good enough. The match at Solihull on the Monday night when hardly anyone else could be bothered is not a good example.

Take your point but Fylde wasn’t a good example either? Thing with a keeper is they are not actually reliant on those around being interested, if anything that’s a positive for them as they will get plenty of chances to show off. Pickford played for the worst team around last season, he still showed how good he was and has done thus far at Everton.

It will all unfold over the coming weeks, he may well get the nod.

Indeed it will unfold. Coming on when you're 3-0 down and the opposition are full of confidence is never ''a good example'' We shall see.

I did think he was at fault for the 4th though with poor positioning. The 5th was down to Buxtons mistake though.

For me though, I said at the start of the season that pilling should be our number 1, and I stand by that.

Understand that but it is the old chicken and egg - how does he get from being inexperienced if MM leaves him on the bench and then when Davies is injured brings in another keeper??
Fair enough if MM thinks he is not good enough/ ready but then he should be out on loan getting some proper games under his belt. Was Clarke experienced before Ridelagh was injured - no but look how he performed. Keeper is a special case I appreciate - we shall see but if MM brings in a loanee then he definitely should get Pilling out on loan asap as otherwise it is a salary completely wasted for the season. PS no way at fault for the 5th - 4th yes not great positioning but then the defence was all over the place so hardly a surprise...

For those that are medically minded .Davies has a 10 inch tear in his quad .Surely that cant happen in one game and therefore suggest he has been hiding it or TRFC have said are you OK and able to play (over how many games?)

If a player is on the bench by definition he's good enough t to be on the pitch, maybe not first choice but good enough. Perhaps we need a loan keeper to provide cover on the bench?

He was struggling at Sutton, and pilling was preparing to come in at half time, until Davies re appeared

Being an ex keeper myself I dont agree that Pilling was at fault for both the goal's. The fourth goal their player had a free header where was the defence?. The last goal Buxton headed the ball straight to their player. Davies was at fault for the firsy three goal's, if he was'nt injured would people be saying that he should'nt play in the next game

If Scotty wasn't injured, I believe most would have given him the benefit of a one off bad game.

In the 2 and a half seasons as first choice what, I would call "bad games" have been few and far between. The trouble is any goalkeeping error/mistake is noticed as usually they result in goals and the goalie has nowhere to hide.

I have always thought the same. But not really seen much of Pilling, but I keep hearing other fans saying he’s better.

I put the question to big nico a few weeks ago, he said he's not ready. So where do we go from here.

Something we won't really know is what the other players think. It's important that the defence has confidence in the keeper - otherwise, jitters will set in. It will be MM's decision, of course, but, as captain and organiser of the defence, McNulty will probably have a say.

If Pilling is not ready for the first team why is he on the bench. If he's good enough to play international football he should be good enough for us

+1 I watched the 'highlights' of the Fylde game and it looked like the whole defence apart from Steve had a meltdown. Goal 4 should have been headed clear and 5 was a mistake by Buxton, apart from that Pilling did make a couple of good saves. I would give him a run in goal, but it is easy for me to say as my job isn't on the line if it goes badly.

At this point all our views represent opinion. It will take run of games before anything becomes evidence. He looks like a promising keeper but I am not over convinced by the international argument. A lot of under 21 players, especially those of Wales and Ireland do not become established professionals

Some internationals would not even be right for NL level. It could be seen as a sense of pride, to play as first choice in any position in the Andorran first 11, as an example, but unrealistic to think you could even get a move to an NL club, as many of those types of players would barely warrant NLS or NLN contracts.
