not sure if anyone on the forum follows the snooker. I am snooker loopy and love watching it. for the past 2 weeks I have been snookered out watching the world championships from the crucible.. a few people in this part of the world are getting excited at the prospect of an all Asian final this weekend with hong kongs very own marco fu and ding junhui from the mainland reaching the semi finals. ding is massive on the mainland and fu is the only really recognizable sports celebrity we have in hk. there is a female indoor cyclist here that is quite decent but she isn't that well known. snooker is huge on the mainland and many think the world championships are heading this way. I think the crucible in Sheffield has the contract to stage it for the next 2 or 3 years but after that , who knows.. I think its inevitable that it will come over here. money talks and none more so than in this part of the world, its just that in my 24 years of living here ive never got my hands on any of it, lol. I for one hope it stays at the crucible. even though it is a small venue everybody involved in the game loves it being staged there. it has the atmosphere, history, tradition etc. not only is Sheffield the steel city but also snooker city. the Chinese would do a very good job at staging the worlds but I think the tournament would be greatly devalued and lose a lot of its soul if it were to be played in a vast soulless arena or huge un-atmospheric trade hall in shanghai or Beijing.they wouldn't be able to recreate a crucible type venue. a lot of tournaments are played here now and most players as far as I know don't mind playing in china. Ronnie o Sullivan and judd trump are greatly admired over here. the northern irish player mark allen made a few harsh comments a couple of years ago about playing in china, but I think he is in the minority and maybe his views have changed since then. but at that time he said he didn't like going to play in china, described the Chinese as uncouth and the food as being revolting and when he wasn't on the snooker table would just lock himself away in his hotel room and do nothing whatsoever to try and absorb some of the culture. I think he should have kept those comments to himself but I did laugh when I first read them, lol. anyway on to the semi finals, I think marco fu will have to be at his very best to beat the worlds no1 mark Selby. Selby is getting better as the tournament progresses. ding is in red hot form and has been playing the best snooker and I expect him to get past alan McManus who has surprised everyone at reaching the semis. I am going for a Selby v ding final but wouldn't like to predict a winner.. on to the footy, the authorities in Beijing and major investors have recently unveiled plans to make china a world football powerhouse. this has been said before but I actually believe them this time. the plans are quite detailed and I haven't really had a good look at them but staging the football world cup is part of them. but before they start they have a helluva lot of cleaning up to do beforehand and eradicate rampant corruption, bribery, match fixing blah blah blah, the list goes on. they need to make foreign players feel more comfortable about playing and living in china and allow foreign coaches to get on with their job without having to conform all the time. generally foreign coaches don't last too long over here coz the Chinese think they know best and don't like folk that fail to conform and that can rebel, ( authoritative commy Beijing b*stards.) but there are no two ways about it that footy should be massive in china. I think they would do a better job than the Russians at staging a football world cup. they did a fantastic job when they staged the summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

good luck kav. reckon it will be a ding v Selby final. ding has been brilliant but Selby is a grinder.

The Crucible, is the home so snooker, to play it in China would be an abomination. I've nothing against Snooker being played in China, but that would be ridiculous and if the Crucible for whatever reason could no longer stage the event in the future, I would expect every effort be made to secure a suitable British venue.

hi kav, did u see that marco fu's tip came off as he was chalking it.. worst thing that can ever happen to a player in a match and something ive never seen before. luckily it came clean off and they were able to glue it back on. if he had required a new tip it could have really affected him.

Yes i saw it. Ive just read steve davis book and he won the world championships with a cue he was given as a 14 year old, he says he was never quite the same player once he started messing with the balance of his cue......

Bizarre incident that when the tip got knocked off Fu's cue and the ref who is doing the final put it back on for him.

going to be throwing a sicky at work tmrw. will be staying up all night for the conclusion of the snooker final. may not finish till 6am hk time.. have just finished watching the 2nd half of the walsall v Fleetwood game and commentator mentioned that sir alex ferguson has recently opened a brand new training facility at Fleetwood and this facility is expected to be the envy of many. Fleetwood plan to develop a lot of young players through this.

Presumably he doesn't have arthritic fingers then, otherwise he might have struggled with some scissors if he'd had to cut a cord.
