Yes - but another manager sacked by Rovers with the backing of the majority of fans.

Do you mean that the majority of fans wanted him gone? I certainly didn't.

Yes, at the time a large proportion of the fans wanted him sacked - not that he deserved it.

How many do you mean by a ''large proportion''?

Impossible to quote exact figures but at the time we were sliding towards relegation from League 1 and Ray was replaced by Brian Little who kept us up. I always liked Ray as he was Tranmere through and through. It is a sad fact of life that when a team starts to struggle, the first person the fans of any club tend to go for is the manager. I have tried to keep a balanced view about the current situation at Rovers and for this reason, have been a supporter of MA. Like any manager, I sure he would admit that he has made mistakes and probably taken risks with team selection that perhaps others wouldn't. My anger is directed at the players, particularly after the comments made recently by both Ray and Alan Rogers. With few exceptions, they are not stepping up to the plate and taking on the challenge and at the moment we are going down without a fight. They are supposed to be professional footballers and as such should be accepting responsibility. For the most part, they are a shambles and a lot of them don't deserve to continue as professionals. There is no excuse for not battling for the cause even if some of them may be lacking in ability.
Having said all that though, if the players did have an issue with MA, we might see a different performance for the final two games which just may somehow allow us to remain in the league for next season. Houdini acts have happened before when clubs have been staring relegation in the face. You just never know.

IIRC, Ray was sacked about the end of September so you could hardly say that we were ''sliding towards relegation''. More like we'd had a run of winless games.

If Managers got sacked for having a poor pre-season then we'd have a new Manager every August of every season!

I seem to recall that Matthias did OK whilst David Kelly was working along side him.

Once Kelly left, we lost something and the rest is history.

Maybe we should be sounding out Kelly as our next manager?

I'm sure the fans would like this.

Good memory, I had forgotten about Kelly who left under something of a cloud. The manner of his leaving may have unsettled the squad to an extent but Ray didn't really get the opportunity to steady the ship despite missing the playoffs on goal difference. I think that side remains one of only 3 teams to miss the playoffs with 80 points, we got more points that year than the year we finished third!
