This week, our sponsorship deal with Wirral hit the national news through the Telegraph and BBC Radio 2. We at Total Tranmere were asked to give our thoughts on the sponsorship to local football website Football Editorial and here is my response...

Jeremy Vine, this host, was extremely unbiased in my opinion, yes. He had Emma Boon arguing against the sponsorship and Mike Parry arguing for it. He was supposed to be the man in the middle playing devils advocate I guess but just sided with Boon, which was very disappointing.

The TaxPayers' Alliance is Britain's independent grassroots campaign for lower taxes.

Why is the campaign manager of this organisation whose aim is above getting involved in this subject?

The BBC is probably the most biased media organisation in this country.

Surely the money comes from the commercial department and this money is set aside for advertising the area, so would have been spent on advertising the wirral anyway?

What people fail to recognise is how the money is spent by TRFC, imo.

Schemes like "Get back to work" etc are funded by this, these are schemes which the community needs and if TRFC didn't do it using Wirral sponsorship money, then WBC would probably have to provide it via another method, but ultimately they'd still be spending £125k on it!

However I have long believed Tranmere could get the money from other sources like big national companies based in shopping centres, which could be more than they get now and spend it in th esame ways as before.

The money from the council could be spent on Lairds instead, because it would make a big difference to them, improve them and if they got a couple of promotions, they'd have a bigger fan base, more money from higher ticket prices and generate more revenue for the local economy and it would support the underdog type team as well.

If they can't justify sponsoring us how would they justify sponsoring Lairds?

That'd be worse, doubt they have the HR to run any of the "community schemes" and the exposure on national TV etc would be far less!

So basically you want the council to stop paying us and give it to a team who could theoretically be classed as our rivals so that they can increase their fanbase in our local area???

Not in the way it sounds. I'm talking about Tranmere financing their projects, through a big company that might provide more sponsorship money, then Lairds could get council money to improve them, go higher up the league system thereby generating more revenue for the local economy and hopefully have some leftover each year, for a bit of community work and / or staff recruitment.

Tranmere could benefit more from a big company that operates locally, giving then more money, but a smaller club could benefit from bigger revenues, to eventually go on and create bigger revenues in return.

Lairds have never really been major rivals anyway and getting one or two promotions wouldn't really change that.
