Daniel Ballard

Daniel Ballard capped an excellent season off by signing a contract extension the other day.

Ballard was released from our academy as a youngster, had a trial with Southampton cut short by an ankle injury and looked set to join hometown club Stevenage before then-Academy boss Andries Jonker invited him to make up the numbers for the U18s in a friendly match against Bayern Munich. Jonker was impressed by Ballard's performance and the way he conducted himself, and against all the odds he signed a two year scholarship. He hasn't looked back since.

A brave, tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender, he captained our U18s to the FA Youth Cup final last season. He is highly rated by U23s boss Freddie Ljungberg and has appeared in 18 of our 22 U23 matches this season, helping our U23s to 8 clean sheets. He also has a nice habit of making goal line clearances.

His form was rewarded in March when he was called up to Northern Ireland's senior squad, being an unused sub in their win against Estonia. This contract extension is the cherry on the cake.

Congratulations to him. A first team appearance in 2019/20 is sure to follow.

Although Medley definitely has his advantages, being left-sided, better on the ball and more impressive physically, Ballard has really impressed me when I've seen him and I think he is the better "defender" of the two.

UI think they're the best bets we've had of producing one of our own centre backs in a while now.

How is it Chelsea is able to loan their players (same quality as Arsenal players) to English Championship teams and Arsenal loan their players to either league one or two? Beilik was playing in League One last season when he was actually good enough to play for Arsenal and now they loan Ballard to freakin League 2.

Dream acquisitions as of 10/15/2018:

CB: Issa Diop/Jonathan Tah
RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka
DM: Franck Kessie/Yves Bissouma/Ndidi
CM: Kai Havertz
Wing/Attack: Ante Rebic/Pepe

Could be for any number of reasons but you'd assume money and reputation play a big part.
