This is the board where Arsenal fans can discuss all things Arsenal, and any other football issues that they feel are of interest to Gunners. Opposition fans are welcome, but remember this board is from an Arsenal point of view. Off Topic Discussion should take place on the Off Topic Forum. Off Topic discussion will be removed. Any topic that is football related, within reason, is not off topic.

Many in the media and the message boards seem to be making the assumption that we will eventually get a fully-functional Koscielny back on the pitch at some point soon, like December. This is wishful thinking.

Koscielny will be a pure bonus if he ever comes back for any length of time. His injury was not a one-off accident that occurred in the course of a single, violent moment. This is not a sudden injury to an otherwise healthy athlete who can simply be surgically repaired, rehabbed, and returned to full strength.

He ruptured his Achilles tendon while jogging back upfield following a corner. He was not running, not jumping, not changing direction, and there was no contact. How and why did that happen? Recall that he had been diagnosed with chronic Achilles tendon pain in BOTH ankles for several years prior to the actual rupture in ONE of his ankles. It is documented that he has missed several matches and been subbed out of others for that very condition. His rupture was a result of that chronic degenerative condition (probably tendonosis as opposed to tendonitis) and, as such, he will be just as susceptible to recurrence of that Achilles pain or damage at any time. Rupture of the OTHER Achilles tendon is certainly at greater risk now as well.

Kos returning to significant playing time for even a short period would be a medical miracle.

From a pragmatic squad-management standpoint, we should be planning on a defence that will never include him again. Time to move on ...
