Sven's first signing?
MattySadler 03 January, 2018 12:26
No, we haven't sacked Wenger and appointed Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager (yet!). I'm on about that bloke we took from Dortmund in November...

So the news today is that Sven Mslintat has identified his first transfer target, 20 year old Greek centre half Konstantinos Mavropanos. Much like you, I haven't heard of him either, but he plays for PAS and from what I can see, he is over 6ft 3 and, after breaking into the PAS first team towards the end of last season, has done well this season and attracted interest from Olympiakos, as well as us.

Apparently he underwent a medical yesterday and will be signing for around Β£2 million, and we'll be loaning him straight out to Werder Bremen for the rest of the season.

It begins.

Goal.

Well I guess it's been a really long time since we signed any decent young players.

What happened to the Polish tall kid we signed like 4 years ago? he was supposed to be the answer to our midfield problems.

Re: Sven's first signing?
Shane 03 January, 2018 16:39
He's injured, and more of a centre-back these days I think.

He did well at centre half on loan to Birmingham last season. He trained with the first team the other day, making his return from injury. Think there's a good chance he could go out on loan this month.

What if this new signing kills Holding?

Watched a 2 minute clip of this lad and he could be amazing or he could be another Gabriel. Looks very aggressive, flies into challenges.

Just what we need with our conceding penalties record of late.

Hopefully he kills Chambers instead. I don't mean this figuratively.

I know many of you are understandably cautious when it comes to youth players, but for me it'll be interesting to see what, if anything, this means for our other young CBs.

Mertesacker will be gone at the end of the season and, if current form is anything to go by, Koscielny and Monreal's top level careers are coming to an end as well. That's three of our four most senior centre backs, so we need proper investment and/ or some youth players stepping up.

Out of Chambers, Holding, Bielik and Sheaf, how many can you realistically stepping up to the required level?

Re: Sven's first signing?
CazOnARola 04 January, 2018 17:23
Holding as the third CB.

Southampton, Everton and AC Milan said to be interested in signing Walcott.

He looks quite tall, which is a positive. Hopefully he's a Manolas type player and not Mustafi!

This guy looks like he could go 12 rounds with Francis Ngannou, let’s hope Wenger doesn’t Wenger him.

Also good luck and welcome to Arsenal... not that he is going to see this.

Wenger couldn't wenger alexis. That's why he is leaving before he loses his ability to shoot from outside the box. smiling smiley

Wenger on if Mislintat identified Mavropanos: "Yes. We talk. We know the players. It’s not that we discover, we know every single player in Europe before Sven arrived. Sometimes, in a little club in Germany, he might know somebody we might ignore"

Arrogant tnuc.

Re: Sven's first signing?

I know nothing about him but i'd start him, that's how bad our defence is!

Re: Sven's first signing?
CazOnARola 07 January, 2018 23:44
Its the attitude and the general morale of the team thsts the pbm.

Is like the team that is in 10th place in April with nothing to play for.

They tend to give bad performances. There's a lot of negativity, contracts etc. Everybody is playing for themselves.

Re: Sven's first signing?
MattySadler 10 January, 2018 23:18
Wenger reckons he's been impressed by Mavropanos in training and he won't be going out on loan. Assuming this now means at least one of Bielik and/ or Sheaf will go out on loan this month.

Re: Sven's first signing?
BootyDaddy 10 January, 2018 23:38
I recall Wenger also saying he was impressed with Iwobi in training prior to him playing for the first team.

Those statements are largely why we're s.hit now.

If players who've broken through under Wenger recently like Coquelin, Bellerin and Iwobi are anything to go by, and recent signings like Kolasinac and Lacazette, we've probably got about 6 good months of Mavropanos before he becomes Wengerised.

Re: Sven's first signing?
MattySadler 11 January, 2018 13:01
Strong rumours today that Wenger knew nothing about this signing, which I think bodes well for those of us who actually want to compete and dream of a Wenger-less future.

Wenger has arrogantly tried to be dismissive of the whole thing, claiming we already know about all the players in the world without Mslintat, and referring to Mavropanos as "the Greek boy", but the reality is Wenger has been that impressed by him in training that he put him straight in the squad and isn't going to loan him out for the rest of the season.

Sven knows.
