Team against Liverpool - what formation will suit us best?

We started with 3-4-3 and after injury to Mustafi, reverted to 4-2-3-1.
And with Mustafi returning and Ramsey out, some said it was 4-1-4-1 with Xhaka as the deep midfielder covering the defence.

Xhaka had committed the most foul and with Coutihno as free kick specialist, it will be dangerous to commit fouls near the box.

........Koscielny .... Mustafi ..... Monreal

...Bellerin ... Xhaka ... Wilshere ... Kolasinac

We need 5 defenders on the pitch to cover Liverpool mobile Forward-4.
Let Wilshere plays ahead of Xhaka and let Xhaka plays what he is good at - a deep-lying playmaker who spreads passes and yet focused on covering the gaps between defenders, anticipates and cut-off through balls.

With 3 no. CB, one of them is always stepping into midfield to help out Xhaka.
Including Xhaka, with 5 in a line, it will be much easier to cover all those through balls and quick-running Liverpool forwards.

In fact, we need Ozil and Lacazette to track back.
And Welbeck will never let us down with his quickness in closing down defenders who attempt to bring the ball out of defender, and running and harassing Liverpool whenever they have the ball.

DO notice that Ozil is the player hovering at centre-circle when we are defending in the box and ready for counter-attacks when we win back the ball.

Wilshere should play higher up as attacking midfielders linking up with Forward-3, but behind Ozil, anticipating counter-attacks and join in the press to quickly closes up passing channels when Liverpool has the ball.

Wenger must have the balls to drop a disinterested ALexis who is non-committal on the pitch and can't be assed to track back, leaving a big void on the left.

he can always be a supersub.
Give Alexis an ultimatum.
Leave in January or rot in the Reserves.

If we play 2 in midfield, we will struggle the same way. Ideal is 4 -5-1 stop their players from poaching the ball off xhaka.

Hopefully wilshere brings his A game. He will be crucial to evading their press. Will probably earn a lot of cheap free kicks for us.

Our pbm has anyways been breaking the first line of defense quickly against defensive teams. But Liverpool will press us high so if we play wilshere xhaka ozil and iwobi, that gives us many options to evade that press.
Their defense is nothing special once you evade the pressing of coutinho, salah, and co., their front 4

I love the lineup by Merlion, just not sure of Xhaka, but he will not be replaced.

Drop Alexis please, but we know Wenger has no balls to do it.

The midfield personnel should depend very much on whether we play 3 or 4 at the back. Liverpool sometimes struggle against team that congest the midfield. 4-5-1 doesnt have to mean a defensive formation. Coquelin and Jack gets my vote for this particular game as they play with high energy and are dynamic and chase and hurry opponents, unlike Xhaka who is less mobile.

And we should play AMN as our left midfield to help out with Salah as he has the right discipline and speed for that role. I don't think Sead has the necessary pace to keep up with Salah. AMN seems to be a better man marker

Litmus I agree on b the coquelin jack partnership.

I'm not sure what others think, but in general 90% of the possession is won back by our defense.

Very seldom does our midfield intercept/wins tackles high up the pitch and quickly create a dangerous transition.

Liverpool /klopps entire game plan is based on these and most other teams including city do this fairly well, but we lack people who can do this barring coquelin.

Sometimes at home coquelin would be a better option even against weak teams that sit deep. He can help stop counter attacks plus he can win the ball through interceptions /tackles and release someone quick to catch teams out in transition.

Most of the time when we play an attack minded DM, we don't win balls higher up the pitch to cause any dangerous transitions

When Arsenal lost 0-4 to Liverpool at the start of the season, Wenger insisted that the transfer speculations surrounding Ozil, Alexis and Ox unsettled the team resulting in the poor outcome for Arsenal. I believe that Wenger has either not figured how to play against a team who presses high or worse still, he does not see there is a problem with his team setup when playing against such teams.

Thats why I believe Wenger will stick to the same team setup as in the previous league game barring injuries. If by half time we are in trouble, he will just ask his team to "move the ball quicker" or "be sharper in the final 3rd", etc.

Tbf we picked the right team. Tried to match them in the middle. Tried to play out suicide to catch them during transitions. Pressed high and tried to double team salah on the left
A right footed left back as against a left footed right winger.

Our execution and cohesion as a team was poor
