Player Ratings vs. Cologne

Ospina - 6. Little to do.

Debuchy - 7. Actually thought he had a good game, penalty aside.
Mertesacker - 7. Dealt with everything that came his way.
Holding - 6. Largely untroubled.

Chambers - 6. Not bad but crossing wasn't great and didn't offer enough width.
Elneny - 6. Steady enough but in games like this we need more going forward. Set piece delivery poor.
Coquelin - 6. Adventurous but doesn't have that "final third" quality. Unlucky not to score.
Maitland-Niles - 7. Bright down the left, particularly in the first half. Good talent. Would like to see him centrally or at least on his preferred side at some point.

Wilshere - 6. Some good touches and occasional bursts but not enough.
Giroud - 5. Never got into the game.
Welbeck - 6. Full of running but still a bit rusty. Off at half time.

Subs:

Iwobi - 4. Given the whole of the second half to impress. Tried to be direct but thought he looked really poor.
Nelson - 5. Lively.
Nketiah - N/A. Not on long.

Really poor quality game. We dominated possession and were mostly comfortable but lacked any cutting edge or end product, and were punished from the penalty spot.

You have to wonder about the selection in games against a side as poor as that. Why do we need a negative Elneny-Coquelin midfield two, when we could play Wilshere deeper instead of one of those two, and then start Iwobi or, ideally, Nelson, further forward?

Top spot secured anyway.

I'm being naive. Of course the truth is that Wenger has used this competition so far as a way to give our 7 league substitutes, fit reserve players and top young prospects first team minutes.

Correct.
Top spot secured and Wenger just wanted to give all his Reserves a run out.
Welbeck was given a run out and taken off in reserve for this weekend game.

Giroud should leave in January as he does not fit into our new high pressing tactics where quick forwards like Lacazette, Alexis, Welbeck, Iwobi, Nelson and Nketiah must press immediately after losing the ball.

Why we beat Tiny Totts is that Forward-3 of Alexis-Lacazette-Ozil will press immediately after losing the ball.

Good signs though with all those youngsters in Maitland-Niles, Nelson and Nketiah gave a good account of themselves without looking out of place against Koln.

Look forward to the next dead-rubber Europa Cup match and hopefully Wenger will go the whole hog and fields 6 to 7 youngsters.
Like to see Macey, Maitland-Niles, Nelson, Willock and Nketiah starts with Debuchy-Chambers-Holding Back-3.

When you go home, tell them of us and say
For their tomorrow, we gave our today.

BBC had Maitland-Niles as Man of the Match with a special mention for Nelson as impressing again in his brief appearance:

Giroud very poor, maybe as result of recovering from injury, or maybe tired of being a stiff, or system didnt work for him.
I thought Nelson was very good.

- until Wenger moves on, they'll always be the also-rans in the major competitions. A club in elite purgatory. Always good enough to make it to the big race, never fast or smart enough to push over the finish line in first place. That's all about the manager. Until he changes, Arsenal fans will continue to celebrate glorious failure.

Mertesacker - 7. Dealt with everything that came his way.
Holding - 6. Largely untroubled.

Chambers - 4. Offered nothing going forward, his lack of space cost us some good momentum.
Elneny - 1. Dreadful. Can't cross, slows the game, needs 7 to 8 toches to control the ball. Worst player on the field.
Coquelin - 5. Adventurous but doesn't have that "final third" quality. Unlucky not to score.
Maitland-Niles - 6. Ok game. Not spectacular.

Wilshere - 6. Some good touches and occasional bursts but not enough.
Giroud - 1. He was useless. Was static through out the game. Might as well play the goal post insted of him.
Welbeck - 5. Full of running but still a bit rusty. Off at half time.
