2016-17 release list

Arsenal will be allowing Yaya Sanogo, Stefan O'Connor, Kristopher da Graca and Kostas Pileas to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month. Strangely, there has been no announcement regarding Glen Kamara, who's contract is also up at the end of this season and was expected to be released as well.

24 year old Sanogo made 20 appearances (11 in the league) in total for Arsenal over 4 years, scoring 1 goal (vs. Dortmund in the Champiosns League., and earned around £4 million. I recall De Times once claiming that Lacazette was only slightly better than Sanogo (Sm105).

20 year old centre back O'Connor appeared to be progressing well during the 2014/15 season, as he featured regularly at U21 level and made his senior debut in the Champions League, but the following season he fell down in the pecking order to midfielder-turned-centre back Krystian Bielik. He spent a short time on loan to League Two side York last season, and spent most of this season on loan to Dutch second division side Maastricht, but both times he failed to make an impact.

19 year old Swedish centre back da Graca joined us from Hisingsbacka in 2014 but, in truth, he never looked anywhere near our standard, which really is saying something! He often appeared weak, lacking in awareness and decisiveness, had poor positional sense, and made costly errors. This season he has spent time on trial with Genoa, Crystal Palace and BK Hacken as he attempted to earn a move away.

18 year old Greek centre back/ left back Pileas, who came from our Elite Academy in Greece in 2015 after a successful trial period, is another defender who made a lot of errors and never looked like making the grade. I believe he spent time on trial at Leicester this season.

Chris Willock and younger brother Joe, both out of contract at the end of this month, have apparently been offered new deals, though if rumours are to be believed they may be off.

I watch the youth games when they're live on Arsenal player but otherwise I go by Jeorge Bird's reports like. You don't need to watch the games to know Wenger's sides are sh*t defensively though!

If you are a young defender and want to have a future in this sport then stay from Arsenal. This club is just incapable of producing or developing talented young defenders.

We don't have anybody with 20 goals in the league, so that is a handicap - Arsene Wenger

Defending just isn't taken seriously here and our youth sides are comically bad at it. That's why our youth teams are always full of promising attacking/ flair players and largely inadequate defensive players. That's also why we often have players who naturally play further forward filling in, in defensive positions.
