This is the board where Arsenal fans can discuss all things Arsenal, and any other football issues that they feel are of interest to Gunners. Opposition fans are welcome, but remember this board is from an Arsenal point of view. Off Topic Discussion should take place on the Off Topic Forum. Off Topic discussion will be removed. Any topic that is football related, within reason, is not off topic.
The decline of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal actually started in 2005/06 when Patrick Vieira was allowed to leave.
Arsene Wenger was frustrated with Vieira flirting with Real Madrid and was on the verge of leaving but changed his mind after he felt insulted when Perez did not made him one of the Galactico.
It was an era of mediocrity for the last 12 seasons, except for an anomaly in 2007/08, Arsenal FC was never competitive to challenge for the title as borne out by the tabulation above.
Salient points are:
1. For the past 4 seasons, we had 7 consecutive losses, and this season, we have 7 losses after playing 27 games.
2. Except for 2007/08 season, we never collected 80 points or more to challenge for the title.
3. Since 2004/05 season, we have a leaky defence averaging from 31 to 49 goals against.
4. It is a fallacy that Arsene Wenger had built a free-scoring team.
….. 3 seasons – 85, 87, 83 goals scored;
….. 8 seasons – 70 to 79 goals scored;
….. 9 seasons – 60 to 69 goals scored;
….. 1 season – 59 goals scored.
Paddy was irreplaceable but we never even tried. The transfer fee for him, Henry and vest still bothers me to this day. All sold on the cheap compared to so many other deals for inferior players
I agree with Tom, but the issue is he was never replaced with a player of quality
- until Wenger moves on, they'll always be the also-rans in the major competitions. A club in elite purgatory. Always good enough to make it to the big race, never fast or smart enough to push over the finish line in first place. That's all about the manager. Until he changes, Arsenal fans will continue to celebrate glorious failure.
Its not worth worrying about anymore, you could buy the best 11 players in the world and Wenger would still fck it up
