Arsène Wenger believes this season has been so exciting because most clubs have become “more levelled out” financially.
The 2011/12 campaign has been voted as the best of the past 20 seasons in the Premier League’s own awards, with a number of issues still to be decided on the final day.
Wenger says the reason for this is because the rewards on offer in the top flight have allowed most clubs to significantly strengthen their squads, making every match a real battle.
“It was a very interesting season because it was really unpredictable and every game was difficult,” he said.
“The differences between teams has become smaller and that is why maybe the quality is higher. There are less financial differences, apart from two or three teams, because the international television rights have gone up tremendously compared to the domestic rights.
“They are shared equally in the Premier League and I think the financial differences are smaller. Therefore the Premier League is more leveled out and there is less difference.”
There have been a number of eye-catching scorelines in the top flight this season, but Wenger believes this is just a natural development.
“In football there are always evolutions and one party always adapts to the problem it faces,” he said.
“When the defenders get better, the strikers adapt and find more solutions to be dangerous. When the strikers become more dangerous, defences will adapt and find a solution to stop the strikers.
“That is why it is always moving forward and nobody can stop that ball. You can say this season that the strikers were on top.”
