RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 14:46
If this is true - and it may well not be, the source is Goal.bloodyCom - but if it is, they've made an absolute hash of this in my opinion.

I don't understand why we wouldn't be persuading RVP to stay with the promise of sincere investment (laugh if you want) and a belting new contract, rather than trying to strong arm him.

I'm all for being tough with keeping players, but this is what needed to do with young players still on lengthy contracts (ahem, Cesc?), not Robin.

Hopefully it doesn't affect our run in, could hardly have been worse timed.

Quote:
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis has personally intervened in negotiations over a new deal between the Dutchman and the club, insisting the Gunners captain will remain at the Emirates until at least the summer of 2013, when he would be able to leave for free under the Bosman ruling.

Goal.com understands that Van Persie has been left feeling “powerless” and “anxious” about his future as it could kill the possibility of a move to a European giant like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Arsenal sources say that Gazidis has calculated that the club are in a far stronger bargaining position with Van Persie than they were with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri last summer because of the Dutchman’s age. He turns 29 in August and will be a month short of his 30th birthday when his contract ends, which is an age that will put off Europe’s superpowers from offering him a long-term mega deal.

Real, Barcelona and Manchester City have all been closely monitoring the Dutchman’s situation in recent months and have hinted of their interest in a possible summer swoop.

Van Persie has told Arsenal that he will resist the club’s attempts to hold contract talks before the end of the season and will wait until the summer before making any decision on his future.

However, the club’s chief executive has decided to act now in order to demonstrate the strength of Arsenal's position and make the club's stance clear.

“The communication has come directly from Ivan Gazidis,” an Arsenal source told Goal.com. “He flatly refuses to sell him at any price. He has told Van Persie, ‘you are going nowhere and can see out your contract’.

“Arsenal are not stupid. If he sees out his contract he will be 30. Real Madrid and Barcelona are not going to recruit him at 30.

“Van Persie feels powerless and anxious. There is no way any club will pay £40m for him this summer, because of his age. This makes him a £20m player and Arsenal don’t need to sell him for that.”

Arsenal are believed to be determined to stick to their stance even if they finish outside of the Champions League place this season.

Is there any real reason to bring all this up, at this point in the season?

Arsenal are arguably at one of their lowest points in quite some time, seems to me IG could have picked a better time to drop the Gauntlet.

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Rockstaar 21 February, 2012 14:59
did IG really say this though?

No idea, I freely admit the source is dubious.

I'm just carrying on as though it were though, for the sake of argument.

Van persie won't be an Arsenal player next season! It's clear as day. I don't care who says he's staying. He's off, and I don't blame him.

I think you will find that both Wenger and IG have been seriously wronged by AFC a number of years ago and this is simply in keeping with their long established goal of running the club into the ground.

Seriously though, AFC dont have the upper hand on the negotiating table - so to try play hardball is folly. If that is the case and we have no reason to really believe it is.

loool yeah right....like Arsenal will turn down any money. if he refuse to sign and the option is to let him go for free or get a 10 million offer, they will take the 10 million. Money talks

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 15:22
10 million is a pittance compared to the value he brings to the Arsenal Brand alone.

People want to watch good players.

Finally showing some balls. Not only does it make sense it's what we must do. We should be protecting our prized assets at all times. I feel for Robin but he signed a contract until next year and should honour it unlike many others.

He is captain and has a reponsibility to this team to see it through. At the end of his deal he has the right to choose where he goes not before.

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Zainy 21 February, 2012 15:32
I dont know if its the right thing to do. This is not a 'Modric' situation where he had 5-6 years left on his contract. He has one year.

I commented on this on another thread and Billy the kid gave out to me. Its crazy trying to bully your best player. He has very little time on his career to play with and his next deal is his last. His stock is up, he's given you a great season, paid you back for the injuries; he won't get the offers he'll get this season if he is made to stay until he is thirty. Wenger is losing the plot altogether.

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 15:44
Wenger isn't mentioned once.

Complete bull
1. A free transfer of Robin Van Parsie at 30 with 3 years @200k a week will be a prize catch for any top club. Unless he losses his form before that.
2. Knowing the money grabbers at the club they will sell him on anything beyond 20 million.
As i said before if the club had any real intention they should have offered a 150k take it or leave it offer to him on 1st jan2012. The fuc.kers have only intention to make money and no intention to reward players who produce results.

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 16:09
Van Persie has said time and again he would wait until the end of the season to open up contract negotiations.

Your idea of offering him a take it or leave it 150k packet 5-6 months before then sounds great for Footie Manager, but I have no idea how or why you think it's that simple.

Agree with sandy on point one though.im sure just because he would be 30 it wouldnt stop man city et al offering him a mega deal

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 16:20
He'd definitely be quite a snag on a Bosman.

whatever happens we can't sell him this summer. this is our only opportunity not to be a selling club.

we're not a fuc*ing charity. its not a case of saying to RVP "thanks for the great season, now you can leave". we need to dig our heels in like tottenham did with modric.

£20m isn't worth it - the cash will just dissapear into the other anyway.

UNFORTUNATELY - I think this is just IG opening up the bargaining with Real etc. RVP is now in play. My guess would be that now this gives Arsenal a chance to portray RVP as unsettled and by the time summer comes they can say to the fans we may as well let him go. I dont think we'd go as far as to sell him to City but we'd sell to a foreign club for sure.

This is just more lies to the fans. We are nothing but mugs in gazidis and kroenke's view.

Wrong time and wrong player to be tough with. Arsenal are at the cross roads not einning anything for the past 7 years and very likely to miss CL qualification next season. IG is being a d*ckhead if he thinks this is the right move. HE shoul done it to Nasri instead but I guess Citeh's offer was too good to turn down.

If I were RvP. I'll play hard ball with IG and get Real Madrid to do a Cesc on Arsenal. Definitely not the right way to treat your captain and top scorer.

Lets just clarify this is an unsubstantiated report. Lets not go over board just yet.

Van Persie could go on strike in the middle of the penalty box and stand still for the whole game and he would still get more goals than Chamakh or Park.

99% of what comes through this forum (and any other) is unsubstantiated.

The fun's in the debate. Lord knows we've have thousands of debates about what Eden Hazard has or has not said.

Ooh burn celine. Park just scored...
[:wor kid:]

Re: RVP told he must stay?

Jens, ahh yes I do realise that. Its just when people start character assassinations based on 'reports' on what they said etc. that gets my goat up a bit.

Re: RVP told he must stay?
Mad Jens 21 February, 2012 19:23
Eh, fair enough.

edit: And did Park really just score?

He did. For the reserves.

Re: RVP told he must stay?

yes, Park scored for the reserves against Norwich City reserves. Exciting stuff. I reckon we're going to see big things from him now.

You do have to say he always does manage to find the net when he plays, though.

Quality of opposition always seems to be the bone of contention (be it here, or on national duty) and that's fine and good, but what more can he do to get a look in?
