My question, specifically to people like radio, is WHY did you start supporting arsenal in the first place? I live in the states, and I've never been to a match. I wake up at 5:30 AM sometimes to watch them play teams like QPR and the like. Last I checked (~10 years ago) I started following arsenal because of the way they played the game. I never once thought "Let me watch these Arsenal matches because of how the club's finances are handled."

What the majority of the fans are going on about is the fact that as a FAN, you should be going absolutely nuts based on recent results. Yes, the harsh reality is that we probably have spent/invested properly, but we've won and shown some fighting spirit. If you can't appreciate that, you're more of an accountant than fan. And your pessimism (albeit fair, this IS the INTERNET after all) isn't part of the majority. Expect to be called out on it. Your conspiracy theories have no place in the euphoria that is a stoppage time winner.

yeah, i'm way late to the party, but it's just absolutely sickening how people worry about finances when we're exceeding even our OWN expectations.

I stared following Arsenal a while before you to be sure. I saw an art9icle from when they won the double in 71 then years later they started airing a programme Called All Star Soccer following a hghly popular programme called Soccer made In Germany. Anyway Arsenal were a decent side at the times - Brady, Sunderland, Stapleton, Jennings, Talbot, Willie Young, Rix, David O'Leary, Pat Rice(he has just been at Arsenal his entire life whatever you think of him so ease up a bit)

Anyway I wasm thrown at first because I recognozed the cannon straight away but found the red-and-white sleeves repulsive and surprising as all I knew where the classic away yellow kit and blue shorts. But I knew then so I chose them and stuck with them. No they weren't the top side them but you didn't expect them to be as good as Liverpool and Forest were along with Everton and Villa and -get ready - West Brom Ipswich Town and Derby Countys.

But we always managed to give those teams a bloody nose and s***s the odd good proper hiding. And we did make three straight Cup Finals (the middle one the stuff dreams are made of) and a Cup Winners Cup Fanal as well. But it was always beating on s***s and taking the opportunity to show the big clubs we were made of sterner stuff that I enjoyed then. Plus I loved Highbury but especially then when the pitch resembled the courtyars od catle built around it patrapets and all in the surrounding houses.

I feel so blessed to have attended the matches I was able to there. Even after all the redesigns I will never forget how Highbury just appears with no warning almost by accident out of the middle of the surrounding community it was camoflauged in. I took an hour or two trying to recreate that moment and still don'yt hink I ever got it right. I still feel it in my bones. Or maybe that's just something wrong with my bones lol.

Re: You people

And to answer your other point the question is could we have done any more to strengthen this team without endangering the club's survival and the answer to that is clearly yes. What is less clear is why it wasn't done and why false claims were offered to justify that that lack of additional investment.

See I understand your view but my vieew is this - we invest noting but oour hearts and sould and in the case season tickets or travelling supporters a fair amount of money we don't necessarily have to spend with making real-world sacrifices.

Why should be happy to suffer pain and disappointment that was completely avoidable just so a bunch of rich people can be even richer. And I'm not even saying they couldn't benefit from their investment or inheritance. I even would have been happy for the Club to pay out dividends and remain under the previous ownership structures. If anything living up to their word as Custodians of the Club wasn't enough for them. That should anger all of us if only because that anger might be the one thing that can prevent this continuing any further from here - provided we actually express it.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about Radio, that is the best articulation of the majesty of Highbury I've heard. It was like a representation of Krishna, a prince among the people.

Without people like Radio (celine is in this camp too), institutions such as corporations, governments and tyrants would run amok. I know that he does not seem to direct his energy or inquisitive mind towards anything other than Arsenal FC (I hope I am wrong about that) but without the question there is never an answer and for any organisation to progress it must allow the question to be asked and the problem is that the club did not, case in point PHW "I don't care what the fans think" !.

It's all turned good now and lets hope that it continues because if it doesn't then we will all be riding the boards a$$ like Tonto by summer, I know I will and why ?

Because Radio is right about the board, when you pay yourself in shares you don't pay tax and when you know that the more money is on the books the more the value of those shares increase it's all too simple to see the conflict of interest, although even when it's pointed out most Arsenal fans CHOOSE ignore it.

When you hear statements like PHW's or go for a tour of the new stadium you soon see how the club perceives the everyday fan, with some measure of contempt and if you think that is nonsense then go on the tour and find out what it's like to be back in the corridors of school being ordered to go here and go there or move on by some half witted, bureaucratic control freak.

This is our club and don't ever forget that. It was not EMIRATES who built our stadium and it was not the board, they merely had an idea but we made it a reality, it is and was our money and was only loaned and it's not ARSENAL PLC paying for it, it's you and me but the club treats us like peasants and of that there can be no rebuttal without first hand knowledge.

I am delighted that the team is doing so well as I love Arsenal FC but I loathe ARSENAL PLC and that is justified although paradoxical.

Re: You people
RadioFreeArsenal 17 March, 2012 14:59
First off you are wrong about that so you can feel better lol Billy.

But the rest of your post Esecially the end is really terrific.

I just hate seeing us give up what was a historic level of success and achievement for no really good reason, and allowing a bunch of multimillionaires to become even richer than they already are is no good reason really.

Actually I see nor problem with them making 50 million or 100 million or even 100 million between them, but did they really need to make 300 million? Would they suffer so much putting a bit more money in the side and making a bit less from selling it for what would still be a massive profit for themselves? Is that so unfair to them?

I don't think anyone here would answer yes(well, Rockstaar and Ayn Rand might...) but I also think there is is an abnormal loyalty to and trust in our Board that has been exploited by them all along since 2005 and you're right they cannot respect supprters they feel the ease in and comfort with exploiting as they do. It's sadly symptomatic of the much bigger global problems we all are seeing.

what the heck has this thread turned into

My original post and what it has lead to on the thread reminds me of the old joke about when the Pope and The Archbishop of Canterbury were on a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square packed with about 250,000 people looking up at them.

The Pope says to The AoC: "With one wave of my hand I can get this lot cheering and waving like mad."

The AoC says: "Go on then lets see what you've got."

At this the Pope makes the sign of the cross to the crowd who sure enough cheer, shout and jump up and down like mad.

The Pope says: "See that, with just one wave of my hand!"

The Archbishop says: "That's alright I suppose, but nothing on what I can do. With one slight incline of my head I can get them completely and utterly crazy like you've never seen them before!"

"Go on then, let's see it!" says the Pope.

So The Archbishop nuts him.

actually this thread reminds me of the Jamaican woman thats on the flight from the US to Jamaica. She sits next to this American man and they start talking to each other on the flight

so the woman says to the man "What do you do for a living"

the man answers proudly "I'm a rocket scientist"

the woman says "really wow!" "do you know why goats sh.t in long small pieces?"

he answers "no, I don't"

she asks, "do you know why a cow sh.ts in big thick pieces?"

he answers "no, I don't"

she asks him " do you know why donkeys sh.t just splatters on the ground?"

he answers again "no, actually I don't"

the Jamaican woman gets up and changes her seat and says to him

"rocket scientist mi ras, you don't know sh.t!"

"how mi fi have a conversation with someone who doesn't know sh.t!"
