Al Jazeera could challenge Sky for Premier League TV rights
Published 16:16 28/02/12 By MirrorFootball

.
Premier League clubs could be in for another massive television cash windfall with a serious challenge to Sky's domination of top-flight domestic TV coverage by Al Jazeera now a "realistic prospect", according to the European head of ESPN.

The possibility of the Qatar-owned broadcaster going head to head with Sky has been speculated on ever since it beat Canal Plus to the French Ligue 1 and Champions League rights.

Now Ross Hair, head of ESPN for Europe, Middle East and Africa, believes Al Jazeera are likely to challenge Sky - a move which if successful would pose a serious threat to the Murdoch-owned satellite broadcaster.

The spin-off of a bidding war for the clubs could be a lot more cash for the 2013-16 domestic rights - the current three-year deal is already worth £1.782billion.

Hair told the Evening Standard: "We're expecting another Premier League auction in April or May. An Al Jazeera bid is a realistic prospect.

"They have done something very interesting in France in buying first division football against the incumbent satellite broadcaster Canal Plus and we've also looked at what they've done in other markets.

"You can draw parallels with the upcoming auction in the UK. Al Jazeera have the ambition to grow further in sport and into other markets."

ESPN are also set to bid as they are desperate to retain their foothold in the Premier League market - they currently show 23 live matches a season.

Premier League football has been the driving force of Sky's satellite TV success in the UK but they have not had a challenger of such potential threat before.

The financial muscle of Qatar has seen Al Jazeera become a major player in football rights, a process that accelerated when the Middle Eastern country won the right to host the 2022 World Cup.

Oh of course it would. From a non footballing point of view it's fantastic that their monopoly is being challenged.

So what would happen we'd all need to stick new satellites on the side of our houses?

Yes this is true many of them do.

Out of interest, where did you buy the movable satellite and decoder from? And do you need some sort of viewing card (like with sky) or is this built in to the decoder? Presumably it is?

I'm thinking of getting a decoder and just pointing my sky dish at one of the satellites but might consider a new dish. Also, do you have to pay any subscriptions?

super rob no viewing card, he downloads a code on to a usb drive, either 6 months or 12 your choice, 120 for 12 months 65 for 6 i think, and installs it on your box, and it unscrambles all the channels

the decorder is attacched to the dish

even when the subscription is up, you still get more channels than the bog standard free view

What if you've got an old dish but no Sky contract? Still got the sky dish and the free channels still work. But switched to Virgin.

I think you just have to point the dish at the right satellite.

You can see what satellites show what tv channels and the satellites' coordinates and what channels show what matches here - [liveonsat.com]

i have an old sky box upstairs in the room as well and when my daughter runs in and decideds she wants to watch doodlebops, i let her watch it on the old sky box

the sat box is connected to a power outlet and the internet..(I forgot to mention that very important piece of info) when you want to watch it switch it on, when you want to watch sky turn it off simples

thats my site lol, i have that bookmared and open on a regular basis

you cant climb on the roof and turn the statelite everytime you want to watch a game

for example arsenal might be showing on nova and sky italia supercalcio, you cant change the dish manually if you want to switch from one to the other for language purposes

the good thing about this is that the channels come pre categorised, so you have a sports section and as you change form nova to sky itallia it rotates automatically

haha, yeah true. At first I thought it would be possible to get any channel on that website and usually there is a channel on a particular sat (hotbird 8 seems to be common) so you would only need to point it to one satellite but if you can't get all the channels then obviously this doesn't work.

To be honest, I'm probably going to stick with streaming for the moment. I get pretty much all games in hd apart from carling cup games and obviously internet is something i pay for anyway. Good to know about this stuff for the future though so cheers for the info!
