I'm not really into grisly modern horror films, all those torture porn efforts are extremely unpalatable.

More of a Hammer man myself or stuff like Halloween where there's a steady build up of tension.

I saw a mad Japanese horror film yesterday from 1977 called House in which several Japanese schoolgirls are eaten/killed by various objects in the house. Not particularly grisly just crazy. There are songs and a man turns into a bunch of bananas.

Your favourites?

I’d go for Rosemarys Baby. Very creepy despite having seen it several times.

Bit of an off beat one is Seconds directed by John Frankenheimer. Very odd casting of Rock Hudson in the lead role.

If you like Hammer films you might want to look out for The Masque of the Red Death based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Stars Vincent Price.

Heard the Exorcist was the scariest film of all time. Watched it and didn't bat an eyelid. Concluded that either I'm a beast or horror is a failure as a genre.

Not eaten the way you're thinking. Or am I unfairly assuming you've got a dirty mind?

One gets eaten by a piano. Her last words are "this is obscene" so there's certainly a sexual element to it.

Mummy films are just too stupid, even in the absurd world of horror.

Rosemary's Baby is a great example of tension-building horror.

Really want to see Rec.

Carrie is one of my favourites. And the Frankenstein film directed by James Whale about 80 years ago is a masterpiece.

Scanners and Shivers by Cronenburg are great body-horror films.

Since the end of WW1, 1919, when the FA restarted its 4 tier football league, with Arsenal fc in the 1st div, there’s only ever been one club to have never been relegated from Div 1/ EPL.

Dawn of the dead.

Otherwise I hate horrors. Most seem to be written by children.

Re: Best horror films

The Shining (Stanley Kubrick version)

The Terminator

The Abominable Dr. Phibes (70s Horror at it`s best)

The Legend of Hell House

The Ninth Gate ( Not that well made a movie,( Roman Polanski) but for some reason I really like it).

Forgot the Shining, its a classic - Here's Johnny.

Nobody mentioned Phsyco - great back in the day caused a sensation - it was the birth of the slasher movie

Audition - just plain @#$%& up and seriously weird

Re: Best horror films
hippogunner 16 May, 2012 09:05
Audition is great. Starts as a sort of male romcom and then veers off into dark horror. Quite bizarre.

Psycho is great, Padre, haven't seen it for years, really need to reacquaint myself with it.

Re: Best horror films

I could have sworn I posted this earlier, but I like really really like that description Hippo.Fits the film beautifully. All I know is it is the most jarring transition I have ever seen in a film.

That movie will scare you if you're a human.

Rec is brilliant, you want a subbed version though, the dubbed versions just seem ridiculous to me. Haven't seen saw or 28 days later but I saw 'the Thing' after seeing it listed as the scariest movie of all time and was disgusted. I didn't bat an eyelid. Same goes for the Exorcist- don't see what all the fuss is about.

Oh that barely begins - I have a genuinely worse Exorcist -inspired story that maybe we can share in a few years.

It's actually why i used to eat lunch there after ward - sort of like staying outside in thunderstorms if lightning scares you.

I`ve just watched `Missery` for the 1st time in 20 years, and what a good `thriller/horror` it is.

Kathy Bates is just brill. Check out the pig scene. Fine, fine acting.

Hobbling, brrrrr.
