6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 25 March, 2012 18:09
So a couple of you may remember me asking pointers a couple months ago from players' perspective because I was starting a team.

Well I did start the team. Mixed with a couple beginners like me( some who hadn't even watched soccer before but just wanted a way to burn their Sunday's) and a couple recreational players we managed to find ourselves in 10th position in our league at the end.

I would call this venture a success (even though there were only 10 teams in the league) because we all played our hearts out and had loads of fun. Even though we lost by a substantial amount of goals every game, every person on the team was itching to get back out again the next Sunday.

So I'm sure that most of you will not care but I plan to outline every game this season which starts today. It will be my online journal shared with peers of a similar interest so feel free to ask questions and leave comments.

Before the season starts, I'll outline our squad sheet and a brief overview of our inaugural season.

Team Sheet:
Robert (me)- Plays defender mostly with stints in midfield. Never played before but with years of watching football, proved to be decent defender by recognizing opposition scoring dangers.

Armando- Plays defender. Never watched a single game or kicked a ball. Started the season shaky but has an amazing engine. By the end of season became one of most integral players. Easily most improved on the season.

Koree- Plays midfield. His situation is just like Armando. Has amazing engine but lacks technically. Would see him as a defensive mid but with only 5 field players, that's not really an option.

Blue- Plays forward. Has experience with indoor soccer which proved integral last season. He is a large guy but is almost a freak of nature the way he handles his speed and agility. Has a powerful and accurate shot.

Josh- Plays forward. Prior recreational soccer experience. Came into his own on second half of season and bagged a couple goals. Tall and lanky. Lacking in technical ability but makes up for it by popping up in dangerous areas.

Eric Soccer- Plays mid. Not sure his last name. Decent dribbler but can't make it to alot of games due to his job.

Erick Moya- Plays mid/forward. Has prior outdoor soccer experience so his tech and engine is good.

Tim- Plays keeper/forward. Probably the most experienced. Solid in goal and just as good at scoring them. Would rather him forward but no one else knows how to play keeper.

Coy- Plays mid/forward. New this season but he was a guest for one game last season. Hope to integrate him a bit into keeper this season.

Last season we were forced into a league that was one better than beginner because it was full when we signed up. Despite this, we had several games where we were competitive for first half but trailed on the end due to fatigue and being constantly outclassed.

This season we are in the beginners league and I expect us to be more competitive. I won't go as far as to say we will win one but we are ever hopeful.

We had three players on the scoresheet last season with Blue, Josh, and Tim. My favorite goal on the season was the first one we ever scored as it came as an assist at my expense. I was playing defender and looped on over the midfield to blue on the left. He beat his man and fired a rocket past the keeper at near post.

Alright gentleman, first game is in a couple hours so you can expect match facts later on in the day. I'm going to go get some kicks and juggles in off the side of my house.

Sorry for poor writing and grammar. I post off iPhone and get a bit lazy.

Id have 'Blue' in my team every match, just so I could shout 'Youre my boy Blue!' whenever he gets the ball.

i imagine you all to have wild long hair and goatee beards, and keep stopping the game to crack open bottles of budweiser. Why havent you got a player called Tex, by the way. If you've got a player called Eric Soccer you should certainly have a player called Tex. When he scores you can go 'Nice Shooting Tex'.

What are your colours and team name?

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 26 March, 2012 01:09
Our games are 25 minutes per half.

Our colors are bright green and black.

Our name was changed by vote today from the "Silly Nannies" made popular by the family guy episode to the "Cold Turkies". Not the best but oh well.

As for Eric soccer, it's just the contact name he is saved into my phone. I don't know his last name so that's just what I put to differentiate from the other Eric.

That's also stereotypical of you Celine. Apart from not being very good at soccer, were actually a pretty classy group of guys.

And I'm sorry to report that there is nothing to report. Our opposition was a no-show today. Not sure if it will be a forfeited win for us or a rematch, that's yet to be determined. However we did have the field to ourselves for an hour and got some quality scrimmaging in

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
Mad Jens 26 March, 2012 01:28
I'm in an indoor 5-a-side league just so I can keep getting touches on the ball during the winter, they penalize no-shows pretty hard though. As in monetarily.

It's about an hour drive every week to get there and I pay a bit of money to play though so that's a good thing. Scrimmaging is nice but I can do that in the field house 5 minutes away.

Was undefeated going into our 10th game last week then got beaten by a bunch of old farts that probably look like Celine. @#$%& moved the ball damn well though.

I genuinely can't imagine what a game of football looks like when it's played by people who have never even watched a game before let alone kicked a ball!

I'll be checking this out though could be interesting to read

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 27 March, 2012 17:37
Well solo sometimes its not pretty lol. The guys who know nothing about the game, I have cleverly slotted them in places which play to their strengths.

Armando is a beast for lack of a better word. Probably 200 lbs of pure muscle who can run at the opposition with the speed and mass of a freight train and doesn't like to be beaten. You won't beat him with a dribble, you have to pass around him.

Koree is our scrappy little midfielder who is small in stature, quick and agile like a mosquito. He will be the first to admit that his offensive traits are lacking but he makes up for it with determination. He has a 'I need the ball from them now' mentality and plays hell on their offense much like a little chihuahua constantly nipping at their ankles.

As as for me, I've never played but I've been watching soccer for years now so I have a decent game understanding. I know how to shut down passing lanes which forces them to take their man one on one, most of the time resulting in an interception. Most of the guys aren't that experienced in the league either so most people lose their nerve when they don't have an outlet pass.

But I'm not here to blow smoke, we do concede alot while scoring few. What we do have is the experience of playing in a tougher league last season and taking that to play in the beginners league. I don't imagine us winning titles this season but were all young and many seasons left.

How many goals have you scored

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 28 March, 2012 00:56
Me personally or the team?

I have scored exactly zero but I hit the woodwork once. Also had one robbed from me. Blue rushed down the right and I set up camp on the keepers far post. He played a beautiful cross across the turf out of the keepers reach. Had 6 feet of empty net in front of me from 3 feet out. A wink of an eye from sidefooting the easiest goal ever made, their defender stuck his foot out over mine and toed the ball away from me. I was heartbroken lol.

As for the team we netted 14 over 8 games and were held scoreless only once, our first game.

I expect better results this season. We lost a lazy defender but picked up an experienced forward who can also play keeper decently. I expect this to mean I'll get forward less but we probably won't allow quite as many goals either.

That's all well and good as I'm not great on the ball. When I do go forward I prefer to find space and fire volleys and one-timers

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
Mad Jens 28 March, 2012 06:05
We just lost our keeper for our playoff run-in because of work but one thing I'll say is don't play a good forward in goal, even if he plays well there.

Get someone in that can do a job but you can't replace quality up top, we have our best striker (coincidentally our backup keeper) play a half out of goal and a half in and it was night and day.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 28 March, 2012 06:47
Yea we do the same. Problem was we didn't have anyone else who knew how to play keeper. I tried a couple times but was abysmal. Our new forward played a bit in net in our scrimmage the other day and stopped most shots so I'm getting more confident in that aspect.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
Mad Jens 28 March, 2012 07:28
Fair enough, do whatever you thinks best. But even an ok defense can limit what your keeper has to do most of the match. Just match sure your wide backs push anyone to the center and you don't get caught upfield on the break and you should be relatively ok.

On the other hand any striker has it all to do up top, so if its me I'd rather have my talent at striker or midfield.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 02 April, 2012 21:05
Alright guys, game one is finally in the books. On the back of a 5-2 defeat, the team still had much to be proud of. The first half seen either team held scoreless. They kept most of the possession but we proved our defense is getting stingy. The team we played was easily strong enough to be a league or two ahead of us. Sadly though, fatigue began to set in and our defense wavered.

We only had two subs to use which hurt in the long run. I took a ball to the lower abdomen which found it's way into my gentleman parts so continued exertion made me want to puke throughout the rest of the game.

Two goals from tim in the second half helped morale considerably. Our loss by 3 was the best margin of defeat yet. It wasn't a win but we all went home smiling.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
Mad Jens 02 April, 2012 21:12
Sounds like you're having fun (apart from taking a shot to the twig and berries) and that the most important thing. Keep at it and I'm sure a win will come.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 03 April, 2012 20:20
Haha yea me too. Hope it's soon though. Can't seem to shake the feeling that a couple guys are getting restless on 9 straight losses. A couple have actually joined other leagues.

If I can ever get on a normal computer I may post a team picture and the league table.

PKGooner 04 April, 2012 01:47
Did you score?

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 04 April, 2012 03:32
No tim got both as well as keeping a clean sheet while he was in goal in first half. Wish I could get one but it's harder to get upfield.

On a selfish note, we picked up a defender who played last season with us. He isn't that good but he doesn't venture forward at all which means I will get to play more midfield.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 16 April, 2012 03:50
Alright guys, time for an update. Last weeks game was postponed due to someone not having the foresight of Easter holiday to arrange that when the schedule was written originally.

That leads us to about 6 hours ago. Have you ever worked really hard at something? Poured buckets of sweat and pain and muscle aches into an endeavor while leading your peers and friends towards a collective goal that after 9 straight failures seems almost pointless?

All we wanted was one win. Just one, just to feel like all the money and time and effort wouldn't be a waste. Well gentlemen, I am proud to report that we have that win.

Today the number 9 team in the league outplayed the league leaders in a hard-fought affair which ended in a scoreline of 5-4. They opened the scoreline around 7 minutes in until we quickly equalized. We traded a couple goals until the half where we trailed 3-2.

Our opposition began to tire early in the second half and we leveled fairly quickly. They began to try and park the bus to save a bit of energy for a push at the end which proved to be a mistake. We stole 2 more goals to bring the score to 5-3. With 5 minutes to go their plan began to work and they took back another goal.

But in the end it proved too little too late and we were actually quite fortunate not to concede another. The game actually ended with the ball in tim's hands after a very nice last effort with ten seconds remaining.

It was truly a beautiful effort up front and in the back. Coy topped the score sheet with a brace while Tim, Eric, and Josh all snatched one for themselves. I didn't do much notably up front except for one play. We got pinned in our half for a minute until tim got his hands around it. I sprinted up the middle of the field and he threw a long ball down the right wall and I went for it. One of their guys came back for it too and it became a 50/50.

I guess I didn't realize how small this guy was but I was determined to win this ball because if I did it would have became a one on one between me and the keeper. So I did what they do on my tv. I lowered my shoulder into his at full tilt. Now I didn't see what happened to this guy but I heard the contact. I'm a large guy and this kid was 130 pounds at best. From behind me it sounded like a horse running into the side of a caravan quickly followed by a whistle. This kid hit hard and I actually felt bad about it.

Other than that, I had some good interceptions and not to whistle my own tune but we didn't concede when I was in defense.

So overall, me and the boys were ecstatic when the final whistle sounded. In that short span we turned from hard working hopefuls into hardworking winners. The monkey is officially off our backs and now we are free to build on this taste of success.

That being said, we will not be getting complacent. We have a tough game again next week but be assured that we will be there to play.

We will be there to win.

At this stage of the season after your horrendous start I think 3rd is a realistic ambition. Will give you enough credibility to attract new talent and push on for next season. 3rd place is as good as a t-shirt.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer

I just read all of this and its pretty awesome waht you guys are doing.

I am playing in a 6v6 league, and to be honest ive never played indoor before and am pretty bad. I played college soccer so i know what im doing but just never played indoor for some reason. Luckily I play on a great team with mostly former college players. I have always played as a winger/ forward (imagine theo but with an even worst first touch). What I can tell you is that the more you play the better you will get. I probably get more touches on the ball in indoor than i have gotten in years of outdoor.

It has also made me a much better outdoor player and I notice little things that i am able to do and confident enough to do that i would have messed up before i started playing indoor.

so keep playing, and playing hard. you and your teammates will pick up skill quickly. not only that but you will also learn little tricks and tactics that will help you. (things like when to use the wall, what passes people look for, what fouls to committ, where to shoot etc.)

Second most important thing, work hard. the hardest teams to break are the ones that work hard and dont let you counter.

Most important thing, have fun. otherwise why play footy right?

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 21 April, 2012 07:04

Sorry i havent posted lately, been a bit lazy. So we have played two games since i last visited with a post. The week before was a loss, 6-3. I wasnt there for it as it was an early game and the night before I stayed up later than i should have with a bit more of the brew than I needed.

Last week we had a bit easier of a game against the low team of the league and we needed it to get back to winning ways. We have grown a bit full of ourselves after our first win.

It was a very tight affair for the first 15 minutes until the keeper fumbled a tricky shot and essentially knocked it in off himself. Not pretty but a goal nonetheless. The first half ended in the same score but we had a feeling we were getting the best of them.

They had one less sub than us but we got the feeling we rotated better and they were getting tired which is very odd seeing as alot of us are out of shape. I chalk it up to our speereet.

Anywho, after about 5 minutes we got our second goal and shortly thereafter our third, fourth, fifth, and sixth while they still sported nil. This scoreline carried on until about 5 minutes remaining and they finally got one back.

So, in our second season after 4 games played we are sitting at position 7 out of 12 with a record of 2-2 and a GD of 0. 16 scored and the same let in.

Individual performances saw an amazing 5 different goalscorers. Erick with 2 and Blue, Josh, Coy, and Eric each with one. Alas, I am still not on the scoresheet but am proud to be in a defense that only let in one, our closest to a clean sheet yet.

Now on to everybodies favorite, my personal performance. Mostly I stayed on defense last week but I did manage a shot on goal that was blocked by a defenders leg. If it went in, would have been an impressive volley. I did try a second volley after that but it ended up looking like a ramsey effort and went many feet over the net.

In defense, had several blocked shots which I'm sure at least one of which would have saved a goal. A ball that doesn't reach the keeper can't beat the keeper I feel. I also saved one off the line but ultimately ended in the only goal. Our keeper came off his line too early so I jumped behind him to cover his far post. Sure enough they passed to the wing and he sent a hard shot in which i blocked right before the line but the rebound came straight back out in the middle too quick for us to recover and they made an easy pass into the net.

So overall, like stated before, we are punching above what we thought we would and even though we aren't at the top, we definitely feel like we are coming together to make a fairly decent beginners football team. We have 4 games left and I think we have to ability to win at least 3 of them, but if not, two wins in a season following a winless season is forward progress which is all any team can really hope for.

Re: 6-a-side indoor soccer
BFGunner 09 May, 2012 16:09
Alright fellas, had another game last sunday which turned out to be a success. Beat a team that was yet again higher than us in the table with a solid 5-3 victory which puts us on a two game win streak and in a solid 5th place position out of 12.

The game was level on 0 for the first ten minutes when a guest player on our team named Raul opened the score. They quickly leveled back up and the rest of the first half saw us trade goals and end the half on 3-3. I suppose we have become a good second half team because we didnt let in anymore goals and added two more to our side to end the game impressively.

The scoreline read a brace for Raul (who has been given an invite to become part of the team for next season) one for Blue, Coy, and Tim. Koree missed a sitter for his first career goal and I had a lazy shot on an empty net easily kicked away by the resident defender.

There wasn't actually much of note to highlight in this game except once again the ball found the old set of plums. Why does this keep happening? Was challenging a header that I thought he would win for sure, so I just bodied him up to put some pressure on. Well apparently he also felt he wouldnt get it so he ducked out at the last second to play my rebound header. I actually had no intention of jumping or winning it at all. And as luck would have it, I did win the header but with the wrong (and more painful) one.

So we are sitting at 5 of 8 played with a record of 3-2. The first game of the season is looking more and more like it won't happen and will just be a forfeit for us. The last two games are against a team that is one spot below us and even on points but has the inferior goal difference and the last game is against a bottom feeder with no wins and a -28 goal difference. Look at me, calling other clubs bottom feeder lol. So it is looking like we will at least finish 5-3 at the worst with a possibility of 6-2 if we win our last couple games. Not bad at all considering our first season we went
0-8.
