I was just wondering what's everyone's favourite Indian dish?

We just had an Indian place open up in town - by all accounts it's quite good but I haven't gotten around to going yet. Would be interested in suggestions of what to try.

Jens try a Lamb rogan josh, with some Tandoori chicken and some dal (lentils).

Ed not all Indian food is spicy.

im all for indian food but i do indulge in Thai, Chinese n Mexican when it borders to being spicey

among the indian dishes, i wld suggest to try chicken patiala. Its boneless chicken with thick gravy entirely covered by egg ommelette... when prepared well, the taste is awesome even when less spices r used

if some1 is a rice hogger, go for hyderabadi dum biryani(veg n non veg both), its a bit on the spicy side but its one of the finest varieties of biryanis

for the ones who can handle spices, punjabi food or any north indian variety shld do good while if some1 looks for not so spicy n can handle bit of sweet taste shld go for rajasthani cuisine... Dal Makhani (lentils) is one of the staple food too

I love all the dishes you mix with rice. My best friend Indian and he took me a couple times. Basically anything I can pick up with a truckload of naan.

Re: What's your favourite Indian food?
Indiangooner 10 February, 2012 05:16
naan can be fattening, chapatis r just as good... made out of wheat flour

My favourite is a mixed tandoori grill starter at Taayabs Whitechapel.
Its called a starter, but with lots of chops and sheesh kebab, and a Peshwari Nan, I havent room for anything else

Lol Ares....that is about as bad as it gets for me.Just the name of them makes me feel a bit unsettled!!

TBH Indian cuisine isn't really my cup of tea on account of the generous usage of vegetable oil which isn't extra virgin olive oil.

Re: What's your favourite Indian food?
celine dion 10 February, 2012 18:05
you cant put olive oil in curry Ares it has completely the wrong flavour.

Re: What's your favourite Indian food?
gunnersingh 10 February, 2012 19:10
Celine you can use olive oil to make curry.

Re: What's your favourite Indian food?
celine dion 10 February, 2012 19:22
most indian cookery books tell you not to because if you put too much in it can produce a strange taste. Admittedly a very mild olive oil will not show up against the spices.

Lamb korma on pilaf rice, a cucumber and mint rayta and dosa bread. for me. The problem with korma is, some curry-houses over here serve it cooked with coconut and some don`t. I prefer it with the coconut background.

I enjoy most curries, but I find vindaloo and that hot prawn dish too spicy for my pallet.

I enjoy Indian chutney`s and sweets. There`s a pancake and coconut dish called Khir that I`ll order if it`s on the menu.

Of coarse you`re right, I think the name of the pancake dish I`m talking about is `alebele`

I thought Indian cooking was done with ghee, which is why Asian community has highest rate of heart attacks in Britain

Padre I would say the majority of the Indian community in the UK use cooking oil. Ghee is used of cause but more so in India.

Weedz I haven't heard of Alebele. But I do love Indian sweets and deserts. Just talking about them is making me hungry.

Re: What's your favourite Indian food?
Padre Pio 13 February, 2012 19:04
you are right I am a little out of date, it is shifting but 25% still use it, and the rest now and then. I suspect restaurants still use it. Up to date figures on Ghee

It`s not just about taste as far as olive oil is concerned.

Olive oil has a much lower `burn point` than other vege based oils. It is therefore not used when high degrees of heat are required.

Virgin light olive oil has a burn point higher than almost any other oil. Ghee has a lower burn point and therefore food absorbs more of it making it tastier.
Best refined oil doesnt add any flavour
