I will be away on holiday in two weeks time, so I have to make my best preparations to get all my jobs done in the garden that will hopefully see it through my week away.
The lawns need a cut, but I'm still not lowering the blades and having put seed down the other week I dont want to really get too low just yet. The weed and feed seems to have done its job and I'm fairly happy with how they look for the time of year
The borders at the back garden need constant attention at this time of year; weeding out the sycamore seedlings is easy thay just pull out, but I have signs of bindweed that I noticed last year and thats a harder pest to deal with. Its no good trying pull this lot out; you need to use your fork and trowel and get them dug out; and you need to try and get the spreading root out too! If you dont do it now, before the bedding plants go in or the existing plants start to spread then you will have a border full of the weed and you wont be able to get at it, without damaging the growing plants!
My potatoes in bags in the greenhouse(first early Rocket) are now growing away well above the top of the compost bags I planted them in and I expect they will be flowering in a couple of weeks time; so I can look forward to some new potatoes for tea when I get back from my holiday.
The potatoes I planted in my vegetable patch are also well through and I am using more of last years grow material to mound up these as they continue to make rapid growth. For both the potatoes in bags and those in the ground, it is important to keep them well fed and watered, as now they are really established it will improve the size of the crop.
Sprouts are doing well in there individual pots and should be ready for planting out in 3 weeks time.
Also got my tomatoes in small pots now(Moneymaker) and I may try to get those in growbags in the greenhouse before I go away.
Happy to report that after a very slow start my fuchsias are coming along nicely and despite the very bad winter, its looks like they have all survived!
Going to be relying on my daughter and her boyfriend to keep the gardens and greenhouse watered while I am away but they have done a good job in the past so it should be OK
So get out there and spend a few hours now that will save you a lot of pain later in the summer and may your brassicas be the best ever
